Hi Jim,

i was up there this past friday and sunday, friday was nice with the snow. by the time sunday came it became a little icy but it was doable with trail runners and without any snow gear. by this coming weekend it should pretty much be melted is my guess.
i will be up there saturday and sunday if my blister heels.
see you up there.

Howdy Jim,

I'll be heading up Skyline this Saturday with several friends. I look forward to seeing you again.

Howdy Tina,

Thanks for the trail report -- hope to see you Saturday.

Howdy Cy,

I hope your ankle is mending and you'll be back on Skyline soon.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Ellen, didn't you call it Cyline Skyline recently? At the risk of sounding super corney, Shouldn't it be called "Sighline" now or during any period that he can't hike it? :D

I'm heading up on Saturday. My back is still bothering me but I figure time is running out for Skyline. I'll load up on advil and coffee prior to departure which should get me to Flat Rock, and since I always suffer above that, what the...... :)

btw - last Saturday I wandered up to 3000'. Coming back down I ran into a guy halfway up from the picnic tables with a huge pack on his back! It was noon, 80+ and he said he was going to the tram station

After telling him everything I knew about the trail he said he'd try to make it to Flat Rock and camp. I can't imagine he made it that far at the speed he was going, but he did have winter gear and crampons. He said he'd never been on the trail before and had already been lost multiple times above the Art Museum. He'd got a late start because he, "hadn't had much sleep last night"...

if its the same guy that i met sunday he is fine. ran into a guy from quebec above flat rock, he was a bit lost, he followed us up with his gear of over 50 pounds. i was actually fine going slow at that moment because i had (have) a blister the size of a dime on my heel.

I'm heading up Sat with a group of about 6-7. Some first timers and some of us that have been up a few times. We're counting on the ice conditions to be melted by Saturday morning. I'm not planning on packing the ice axe and crampons on this trip, but I am looking forward to when I'll need to... :D
The weather looks good all the way till Sunday

Tinaballina,

Thanks for the info, hope to meet you Sat. I haven't been up since May so I'm really looking forward to it. Three of us going, one is a first timer. We're a little rusty and will be going slow. All the better to enjoy the incredible scenery!

Ellen,

Look forward to seeing you! I know you've had at least one incredible adventure since we last met, and it's great that you're still out there doing what you do so well. We're leaving the Desert Museum at 3:15. I'll be looking for you.

The weather looks nice and cool for this weekend. Here's the National Weather Service forecast for Palm Springs:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 50. North wind around 5 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming east.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. West wind around 5 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. West wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Has anyone checked to see if the the icy section above Flat Rock is melted out? It looks like it will be cool enough to hike back down if it ends up being icy up there above 7000'. Actually, with that forecast this might be just the weekend to do a round-trip on Skyline.

Skyline Dec 6

Postby Cy Kaicener » Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:46 am

I was wondering about the last 1000 ft to Long Valley also. This section gets very little sun in winter. I will check out the top part of the trail tomorrow after taking the tram up and let you know for Sunday. Sorry that I could not get away today.
