Long View Dome is down Long Canyon a way toward Palm Springs. On the topo it's roughly Lon. -116.63484 Lat. 33.80685 (or at least those are the coordinates I get from Terraserver).

From the downhill side it's about a six pitch climb, fairly easy around 5.5 and from the uphill side it's class 3 maybe. From the top is a great view of PS.

Is the one marked as Point "A" the one?

Zip - if you do the SJ to SG trip and need help with a shuttle or someone to resupply you, I'll be happy to help.

The portion I would like to froom the Coon Creek area to down to Mission Creek where I stopped last spring and then back up again.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to try some new routes. I'm to jog the Fire Road to Indian Mountain:

and then I'm going to put a heavy pack and boots on and hike up the Black Mountain Trail to Black Mountain (I'm supposed to be training with extra weight right now but it's sometimes so hard to put that heavy pack on):

Thanks for the generous offer! I might need to take you up on it...

Hey, are you training for something specific?

If you need a clear road for training that's close and convenient, you can do the old dirt road that runs from where the 243 veers left and goes up the mountain. The old road continues straight, then turns right and becomes a dirt road that winds its way up the mountain and comes out right where Poppet Flats road intersects the 243 at about 4000 feet elevation.

It's closer than the roads in your post, but not nearly as scenic. I've done it a couple times because 1) it's easy to drive down from the top and cache water at various points (vehicle access from the bottom crosses a sandy wash, which I'm afraid would bog down my car) and 2) it's just over 10 miles long, so you can get up to a 20 mile training run in on a nice, evenly graded road without having to run on asphalt.

Zippety: Thanks, I didn't know about that road - I'm going to have to try it sometime.

I'm trying to get in shape for climbing Pico de Orizaba down near Mexico City. I'm supposed to do it in the beginning of January with a group of guys from the east coast, but I'm not in any shape for it right now. I'm going to try to train with weight on my back and my heavy boots to get in shape. If I'm not getting anywhere with my training when December rolls around I'll probably put the trip off until next year. The reason I want to try Pico de Orizaba is because it's 18,500'+ and it's about the least expensive way I can find out if my body can go up to higher elevations. I struggle at 14,000', so I have a feeling the air will be too thin for me to get to the top of Orizaba. It will be an adventure trying though.

Yes.

Here's a picture from the Skyline. It's the middle rock toward the top. Kauffman is to the right.
