Parking at Museum for C2C

Postby Reego » Mon Oct 06, 2008 12:22 pm

Is it OK to park overnight at the museum? I'll be hiking up skyline on Friday, 10/17, and plan on leaving my car at the museum and not picking it up till Sunday, 10/19...What is the address of the museum so I can look up directions? Also how far is it from the tramway parking lot to the museum parking lot (I plan on taking the tramway down from the mountain)? Will it be easy to get a cab to get from the tramway parking lot to the museum? I'm hoping I don't have to walk back to my car at the museum. Sorry about so many questions

Reego,

There is an apartment (or condo) complex on the street adjacent the museum. I don't remember any parking signs there restricting parking but of course it is a good idea to check. It's only about a hundred yards from there to the trail head at the back of the museum parking lot. I've heard from people that park in the museum parking lot itself with no issues but I prefer the street just in case (as long as the street signs have no restrictions).

Getting a cab from the tram is easy. When you get there and buy your tram ticket ask them if they can call a cab for you. They'll be waiting for you at the bottom of the tram and you drive right back to your car. It's about a $22 cab ride back to the museum and about a $10-15 tram ride down. It is several miles from the tram parking lot to the museum. After C2C, you will not be in the mood to walk on hot pavement for more miles. The cab is nice despite the cost.

What time are you going that Friday? I'd like to go again this year but I've been healing a pulled hamstring so it's unknown until I give it a test this week.

Good luck!

Where are these break-ins happening? Are they underneath the trees right past where the road makes a bend?

Or across from the front doors of the museum?

I would think the second location would be safer because of better lighting at night.

This street lamp looks like a good choice:

It's over by where James suggested. Farther walk, but might be worth it.

James,

I'll be starting around 430am on the morning of Friday, October 17th. Let me know if you're interested. I am still looking for someone to ascend with me.

Perry,
I've not heard about break-ins at the museum but have heard about them on Ramon Road. The street parking next to the apartments/condos has street lamps and no trees around.

Reego,
My leg is better and I might try Baldy or something this weekend. Though I've been trail running a lot at low elevation, I've been out of the mountains for two months. If my leg holds up this weekend, I'll still be out of mountain shape. That said, if I make C2C on the 17th and I start to lag behind you'll know why. :)

James,

Baldy is a good trip, I have definitely run to the top quite a few times myself. For C2C I am planning on hiking up though and bringing some ultra light camping gear with me and staying up on the mountain. Is the water free at the ranger station? Or is it bottled water that you have to buy?

Reego,

Water was free when I did C2C back in May, I just filled up from a spigot at the ranger station. Or maybe it was a drinking fountain I can't remember. I didn't catch anything so the water must have been ok. I was in Long Valley at about 6:30am so no one was around to ask.

As for running up Baldy, I'm not planning that, I'm only planning a possible hike to test the leg (and to get in at least some hill work if I try to get to Skyline Friday, the 17th). I've not run up Baldy but considered the race on Labor Day before deciding against it. I don't run enough hills to be able to do that comfortably. I hike up hills faster than I run up them. :)

About this time last year, 3 vehicles on the street in front of the museum were broken into, one of them being mine. Luckily I had nothing to steal in my truck, but I still had to get a new window.

The thieves know hikers start early there this time of year. They may even be watching this board to see when large groups are leaving early. I would find somewhere else to park.

All three cars were parked here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=101+museum+drive+92262&sll=33.852455,-116.547089&sspn=0.137428,0.2211&ie=UTF8&t=h&layer=c&cbll=33.824536,-116.549438&panoid=knHlqLp_si3DlasM4xwJcQ&cbp=1,97.34486323396942,,0,6.876375378049547&ll=33.824999,-116.549374&spn=0.001575,0.002414&z=19

They break the passenger window so it cant be seen from the street by people driving by.
