C2C on 10/11

Postby sf_hiker » Sat Oct 04, 2008 9:40 pm

Hello All,
I am hiking up C2C on 10/11. There are several posts on this forum warning about the unkept trail and how hikers get lost. Is it really that bad?

10/11 seems to be pretty close to full moon and I'll of course have a headlamp for early morning section.

Alternately, is anyone attempting C2C from museum on 10/11? I'd love to tag along.

Thanks.

Let me retract that. A low a 68 for next Saturday in Palm Springs is pretty warm for me - I might not be headed up afterall.

Thanks Kathy, I might still brave the heat.

Anyone else heading up C2C on 10/11?

I had planned on going with KathyW that day, but since it is my first time I will follow her advice and wait. I wont go the first time with out an experienced guide. -- Maybe Oct 25th

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from going on October 11th. I just don't personally do very well in the heat. I went up once on a warm day and ended up cramping up above Flat Rock; so I will wait until the forecast calls for an overnight temperature of 60 degrees or lower to give C2C again.

Other people will do fine on warmer days and might not even consider an overnight temperature of 68 degrees warm.

The forecast might change and it will turn out to be a great day for the hike on October 11th, but for now I'm going to wait a week or two to try.

http://www.weather.com (enter Palm Springs Zip Code 92262) and http://pstramway.com have predicted a somewhat cool day on 10/11 in Palm Springs and at Long Valley. By Thursday we should have a better idea. Hopefully the Santa Anna winds wont blow :)

Skyline Oct 11

Postby Ellen » Tue Oct 07, 2008 9:45 am

Howdy All :-)

As of today, the weather report indicates a cooling trend. If so, I'll be doing Skyline this Saturday.

Like Kathy, I do not do well in the heat. I hiked the Grand Canyon rim2rim2rim last week and the temp was in the mid to high 90's at Phantom Ranch on both days. I was melting and felt awful on the climbs up both the north rim and south rim. I'll post a trip report soon.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

The National Weather Service is now down to a low of 57 degrees overnight in Palm Springs - things do change fast.

The updated forecast sure does make it sound like it will be a nice day out there this Saturday.
