Southern California and far-away places. Hiking, wildlife, cycling etc.

Hi Tina.

Hey, by the way, I posted back real quick (just in case you could go) and in my haste neglected to say Great Job on Whitney!

Rumpled: Great job also! I enjoyed your TR.

By the way, Tina, I didn't mean to sound like I'm in a great big hurry. I usually have the choice of either doing Whitney in a day (including the drive) or not doing it at all, so I'm forced to squeeze it in as best I can.

See you out on the trail! No doubt you're already contemplating how to beat last year's time!

Hi Z,

I am also thinking about doing a Whitney day hike Thursday or Friday this week, depending upon my work schedule. I had to give up my original permit in late July because of car problems . Is it difficult to get a day hike permit the day before (for only one person)? Do you have to be at the ranger station by noon the day before? I am hoping that I can wait until mid or late afternoon so I don't have to waste time in the morning traffic. Thank you for your help.

Permits for dayhikes become available at 11AM the day before the hike. I usually stop at the VC around 3PM, and have always been able to get one because there are always no-shows. I think one time I got the next-to-last dayhike permit, but it was during the busy time.

Kevin,

Thank you for the permit info. Being able to pick up a permit during the afternoon and having a few extra hours in the morning makes life much easier for me.

Hi LarryC.

I've typically gone in the same morning as soon as the office opens, gotten the permit, then driven up and started right then.

The tricky part is that if I show up and there are none available, I'll have to spend an extra day waiting to get the permit, but I've never run into that. Like Kevin said, there are always cancellations, so I imagine you'll be fine.

My work is looking hectic right now, but if I'm able to go, maybe I'll see you along the trail!

Congrats Tina and Rumpled!

I was over on Mount Mallory looking at Whitney this past Saturday - that area is really beautiful.

Nope, gotta work instead. Hey, see whitneyfan's TR. Glad I didn't go Wednesday!

I'm thinking about a one way run from the Cottonwood Trailhead up across San G and popping out at the San Bernardino Trailhead instead. If I do it (and survive, it'll be kinda long) then I'll post. I might wait until the weather is cooler, but I'm hoping to do it before the first snowfalls.

Kevin: I don't see Woolyback on my map. Is Woolyback one of those peaks that isn't officially named? I have an idea that it's over by Langley somewhere but I'm not sure which one it is. What's the elevation? - that will help me locate it.
