Skyline Rescue in Progress

Postby Hikin_Jim » Fri Sep 05, 2008 10:17 am

From Hiker Hell: http://hikerhell.blogspot.com/2008/09/exhausted-hiker-being-rescued-from-palm.html

Apparently an exhausted woman on Skyline has called for help. Hope she's OK.

Today's predicted high in Palm Springs is 107. THIS IS NOT THE TIME OF YEAR FOR SKYLINE. Give it a month. The mountain will still be there, but if you go now, maybe you won't be.

Jim - The Desert Sun says she is stuck on a cliff above La Quinta. She may have lost the trail descending.

I wonder why rmru.org does not post anything any more. They did not post anything about their Suicide Rock rescue :?:

Cy:

Those appear to be two separate incidents:

They just posted an update re the Skyline incident: http://www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080905/NEWS01/80905007
Apparently she regained her strength overnight and was able to descend on her own.

Can someone briefly sum up how the SAR systems work? I am aware of a few groups but that's about it. Rick volunteers along with others but I don't know if it's 100% volunteer or paid organizations that accept volunteers. Like who owns those helicopters and such? Who pays for all this stuff? Thank you.

FIGHT ON, while we're waiting for an expert to post an answer to your question, here is a link that lists some of the California SAR organizations.

The real story of this incident:

A woman hiked/slid down below Grub's View at the mountain station to a point where she was unable to continue up or down. Not on the "Skyline Trail". The point where she ended up was at an angle in excess of 70' (very steep). She was in fact assisted off by 2 Mt San Jacinto Park aides and a park Volunteer. The incident was completed by 10 pm, with all safe and sound. Kudo's to our local hero's. Unfortunately the story was less than factual as reported by the press....again.
