Clarifying the trail at the peak

General Palm Springs area.

Postby Hikin_Jim » Thu Aug 14, 2008 10:34 am

Well, if I were in a place where rocks were uncommon (e.g. expanses of slickrock in Utah), I probably would interpret it as a duck.

However, in places where rocks are common (e.g. San Jacinto Mtns), one rock on top of the other happens all the time. Consider the switch back area just below the small saddle where the San J Pk trail takes off. One rock on top of the other wouldn't have much meaning. Three or more would.

Regarding direction indication, I agree with you. I would still make a duck of 3 rocks and then put two or three rocks to indicate direction. Things lining up in 3's isn't very common in the wild. Just my thoughts.

Re: A cairn is NOT part of a trail

Cairns are an annoyance because you can never know if the cairn is in the right place, if the person who built it knows what the hell they are doing, if they are taking you in the WRONG direction or even if they are deviating from the main trail and creating more trampling of sensitive areas.

I, too, have gone the wrong direction on a trail only to discover a previously unknown area. I have come back different ways on several occasions and like it because I get to see different terrain.

Some people may find it presumptuous that I would not leave someone else's trail marker alone but I think it's presumptuous that those people think their way is THE way.

I don't need your stinkin' directions.

If you want to find your direction, I would recommend a map and compass (or GPS if you know how to use it).

Except to mark a summit I can think of NO use for a cairn whatsoever.

I think we're going to disagree on this one but that's OK.

You keep building those ducks and I'll keep knocking 'em down. :D

Why limit it to kicking ducks that are telling you where you should go?
Those people who put those ducks are pretty damn arrogant if you ask me.
Who do they think they are anyway?
I know where to go. I've been in the area on this trail a billion times. Do they think I'm stupid? I'm not stupid.
Well yesterday I went about my day and saw things in a WHOLE NEW WAY I tell ya.
For example.
I got up and made some oatmeal. I noticed on the back was some instructions. INSTRUCTIONS???
WHO THE HELL PUT INSTRUCTIONS ON MY OATMEAL? Do they think I'm stupid? I've been eating oatmeal for 50 years. I know how to make oatmeal. What makes them think their directions are THE only way to make oatmeal?
So I drop kicked that box so hard it's all over the kitchen and dining room.
NEVER GONNA BUY THAT STUFF ANY MORE.
Then I went took a drive down the street. When I go to the corner I saw that same old street sign. ON MY CORNER. WITH THE NAME OF MY STREET!
WHO THE HELL LEFT THAT STUPID THING THERE?
I know what my street name is. I don't need a sign as a reminder. So I drove right over the post and knocked it down. If someone else wants to find this street they can look on a map. and use a compass.
Then I got to the freeway on ramp. There is this sign there. WITH AN ARRROW!!!!!!!! LIKE I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE DAMN FREEWAY IS. So I smashed it.
Went for a hike in the front range. Been on it many times. Then I came across this sign. Said how far it was to the next camps and such. Now this really pissed me off see because I carry a map, AND A COMPASS. Ya see I already know how far it is to these places. I've been there a thousand times already. And it had arrows too. Like I don't know where to go or something. Like their saying THIS IS THE ONLY WAY! I was so mad. I wasn't prepared for this but it quickly became clear why all the other signs I've been seeing lately have ax chop marks all over them. These are fellow "NEW WAY" members who are at an advanced level. I totally understand why they would hack them to death.
I got home and my wife told me that she loved me.
Totally uncalled for. Like I don't already know. I just walked away. I'm not a wife beater, yet!
At dinner she asked me how I liked the food.
I said "I'm eatin' it aren't I?"
Can't wait to see what else is trying to tell me what to do.

Maybe I'm on the wrong side here. I wonder if from now on I should start building trail markings.

Everywhere.

Even on easily followed trails.

When I am going cross country.

In the wrong direction.

In meadows.

On boulder fields.

Along sidewalks.

Highways.

In my house.

You know, like those who currently build them.

Funny how someone would think knocking over a duck is juvenile. Is picking up trash also juvenile?

What gives someone the authority to build a makeshift trail marker?

What happened to leaving only footprints?

Obviously, road signs, which are governed by laws of the state, are far different than the anarchy of anyone building directional aids wherever the hell they want.

Do you espouse allowing the general public building road signs wherever they feel the need? How about if you don't like the name of your street? Why not change it? Hell, your neighbor can change it tomorrow if he wants.

And oatmeal? What on earth are you talking about? The manufacturer of a product can put whatever it wants to on that product (within legal restrictions). However, I cannot go and randomly change the instructions on a product to whatever my whim is. That is what someone building duck is doing. They are, on a whim, changing the directions and making their own trail for all to follow.

Just like I do not have the legal or moral authority to change the dosage on your Ritalin prescription--although someone should--so also you do not have the authority to create a trail wherever you see fit.

"you do not have the authority to create a trail wherever you see fit."

Hmmm. Let's look back at the initial post that prompted your response(s).

"I get the idea that many of the hikers getting lost fall victim to the rather disorienting view from the peak, and come back down in the wrong direction without knowing it.

The post was looking for clarification as to where an official route, not my route, might be. Furthermore, the purpose was not to help myself, as I seem to have found my way back to the trail each time, but to help those who are perhaps newer at finding their way and would end up lost.

Whether or not you will admit it, the comment about knocking down ducks didn't make any sense given the context. "Juvenile" isn't a bad description. And FIGHT ON's humorous analogies do make sense, as well as adding a little bit of fun in response to a rather abrasive post.

If you've really been to the summit 100+ times, perhaps you're a natural at finding your way, and you're obviously not lazy. Unjust laws exist and a moral person would do well to disobey them. We do so knowing full well the consequences if caught and willfully accepting those consequences in order to bring light to an unjust law.

However, there also laws which rightfully govern the usage the public square or all public areas. We can break those as well but will again suffer the consequences.

And robbing banks? You're reaching there. That's almost as silly as your post about oatmeal.

You may put up ducks anywhere you wish. Most of the time I wouldn't care or bother with them.

Now, however, I have a new mission when I go hiking: knock over as many ducks are possible.

Hmmm. Let's look back at the initial post that prompted your response(s).

"I get the idea that many of the hikers getting lost fall victim to the rather disorienting view from the peak, and come back down in the wrong direction without knowing it.

Has any official route ever been established? If so, I'd be willing to help clarify the trail above the hut"

When you mention that perhaps you are on the wrong side, you're beginning to catch on.

If you've really been to the summit 100+ times, perhaps you're a natural at finding your way, and you're obviously not lazy. I think you probably have more important things to do than killing poor, innocent ducks, especially if they're part of an established, official trail that helps people find their way.

To my knowledge there is no official established trail through the boulders to the Peak.

And where there is an official established trail just follow the trail. There is no need for ducks.

As spokesperson for the "NEW WAY", let me start out by saying that our leader, KING OF THE SELFCENTERED, is staring at a public clock as I write this, screaming at the top of his lungs that he knows what time it is and doesn't need any stupid clock to be within his view telling him so. What makes it better is that he is in his jeep on the freeway and has stopped traffic in the middle two lanes. WE WON'T TAKE IT ANY MORE!
We at the "NEW WAY CENTER" don't give a damn about anything whatsoever. WE DO AS WE PLEASE NO MATTER THE OUTCOME! THE THOUGHT OF SAVING A LIFE COMES IN ONE EAR AND GOES RIGHT OUT THE OTHER. So speaking to us with different arrangement of words that supposedly have some meaning to YOU, HAVE NO persuasive value to us, AT ALL!

Please take a breath. It's OK. Really.

You enjoy chaos where anyone and everyone can put markers wherever the hell they want. That's OK. You probably enjoy tagging because it's the same thing. Someone is putting up their own unofficial marker to show where they have been. So one is in paint and another rock piles. Both change the landscape to benefit the tagger/ducker.

I prefer to read the terrain, use my skills to find my way in the wilderness and enjoy the nature without leaving a trace. To each his own.

Oh, BTW, I'm also a Bruins and Irish fan.
