Where did you hike this week end

Tina - when you do Whitney, will you report back if your ascent time is similar to Skyline? I use Skyline as a predictor, and it's accurate for me (within 10 minutes). I've mentioned this to other people, but I haven't heard of anyone doing both, so you're the perfect person to ask, if you don't mind.

Whitney's fun, but expect to be a little numb above the neck after Trail Crest.

Ellen - I'm sure you're at Whitney Portal by now, or maybe in Horseshoe Meadows, but I'd like to hear about your trip when you get back too.

HJ - I wish we'd known we'd both be up there at the same time. It would have been fun to meet for breakfast or at the Postpile. Did you swim at Rainbow Falls? I jumped in and swam a bit, but the water was cold! Ouch. Still, very beautiful and tons of fun.

James - October is primetime. Also, when I see the amount of effort put into building those charcoal kilns, I think, "Those people must have really wanted charcoal!" They're kind of amazing to me. I haven't seen the ones at Telescope Peak, but I've seen some elsewhere, and I was surprised.

Alan - 40 miles as a dayhike! Sweet! Do you guys run part of it? There's only so much time in a day, and 40 miles is a long way, no matter how you do it. Congrats!

We've done Skyline in 4:30 a couple of times and Whitney in under 4 hours a couple of times. I'd have to look up the exact times, but we're definitely faster up Whitney. Actually, it took 12 hours to get up Whitney on Tuesday, but we had an excuse.

Whitney's fun, but expect to be a little numb above the neck after Trail Crest.

I experienced that on Tuesday -- on the way down.

Thanks, Tina, but God gets most of the credit on that one. Mammoth is so nice you can just about point your camera in any direction and get a great photo, but I am pleased with how these turned out, especially since my good camera got destroyed and I'm using my wife's older and not nearly as nice camera.

Yes, doggone it. I'll have to post in advance from now on. I went with Michiko this time. Michiko is petite and has almost no body fat. As a consequence, swimming in cold water is pretty much out. When I've swum below Rainbow Falls in the past, it has been dang cold.

Speaking of posting in advance, my trip this weekend to Matterhorn Pk (12,279') got cancelled; one of the leaders injured his knee. I'm now considering Red Slate Mtn (13,123') Aug 16 - 18. If I'm reading things right, the last couple of miles to the summit look Skyline steep -- except at 12,000+ feet instead of 7,000+ feet like on Skyline. Yikes!

I don't know if i can do it in record time the first time around but i will surely let you know. I don't get the numb part though???

Yeah, I didn't think of that. It's nice to take your time on the first time up. I always take my time on the way down, but there's a lot of beautiful views on the way up that deserve to be enjoyed.

The numb above the neck part is referring to the altitude. Trail Crest is a bit over 13,000, right after you climb the 97 switchbacks, so I usually feel a little delirious at that point. You'll pass the "windows" as you go across, and looking down a few thousand feet doesn't help when you're already dazed. That sounds negative, but I mean it just the opposite - it's a wonderful experience and more fun and rewarding than I can say.

There were a couple of photos toward the end of our hike where Michiko was looking pretty tired. When Michiko saw those my permission to post was revoked. Gotta love marriage.
