Where did you hike this week end

General Palm Springs area.

Is Baldy a hot climb in the summer? Baldy in spring is fun, great sliding down the snow. I'd like to try register ridge sometime.

Did Telescope Peak from charcoal kilns last week. Cool hike (except for the hike back down the road to the kilns). Did Vivian Creek up San G. couple of days ago. Saw about a half dozen people most said they were training for Whitney.

When does Skyline begin to cool and first snow? October/November?

As for skyline, i think they say that october it cools off. i am thinking of starting back on skyline mid september, my patience level is low...lol

I was up in the Mammoth area too! Went to Devil's Postpile, Rainbow Falls, and climbed Minaret Falls (actually a cascade). Also, I tried out the PCT up from Pumice Flat to Shadow Lake, then back down the John Muir trail to my starting point. Beautiful waterfall just before Shadow Lake, and a beautiful area in general, but the bugs drive me nuts.

From there, we went to Tuolumne Meadows. No bugs! I tried out the Snow Creek Trail (from Olmstead Point down to Yosemite Valley and back), and it was tough. There are somewhere between 107 (my count going down) and 102 (my count going up) switchbacks in the mile or two just as you come up out of the valley. The switchbacks gain about 3000 feet, so it's kind of like stairs the whole time. I thought Whitney's 97 switchbacks were a lot! I was whimpering as I passed 100 - especially thinking about turning around and going right back up.

Fortunately, I got an Odwalla bar and a bag of Funyuns in the valley, so I had all the carbs and sodium I needed. (Nutrition is not an exact science with me!)

Saw a bear in the Tuolumne campground. First time I've seen a blond bear - his paws and head were brown, but his back was a blondish color. The ranger was trying to shoo him out of the camp, but the bear kept going up trees. I was amazed to see how easily and how high (50 or 60 feet) he went up, then came back down just as easily.

Also, saw a doe with a couple of tiny spotted fawns. They were not at all frightened, one of them even stopping to nurse with me just 100 feet or so away.

Anyway, I enjoyed everyone's posts above. Cool to see where everyone is going and what they're doing.

The Trail to Whitney

Postby Ellen » Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:30 pm

Howdy All :-)

Last Saturday, Lance and I hiked from the tram to San Jacinto as a taper hike for my annual Mt. Whitney day hike this Friday (August 1). It will be almost 6 months to the day that I fractured and dislocated my left ankle.

We took the first tram up at 8 AM. It's the first time I've been up San J via the tram route since "Chillin' with Ellen" on February 2.

We connected with Karin and her friends Twan and Melinda on the summit. The clouds were moving rapidly over the summit and threatening rain. The scenery and company were exquisite. The humidity was so high, I actually had to wipe the sweat out of my eyes going downhill.

Once we had passed Round Valley on the way back, we took the Willow Creek connector trail for a different perspective and more solitude. On the way up the concrete ramp, I realized that I dislike this part regardless of the difficulty of my hike.

Enjoyed a terrific meal and beer at the original Las Consuelas. I look forward to returning and completing Walt's loop from the tram as well as my second Skyline of 2008 when the temperature drops.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Eric and I did a day hike from Horseshoe Meadows to Whitney Portal (with a little side trip to the summit, of course) on Tuesday -- 40 miles. We did write up a trip report.

Tina: Will give Baldy in summer a try! Agree on the warmer weather (but not too warm), don't pull muscles as easily.

HJ: Great pics!

Zip: Bears need sunscreen too.

Ellen: Your winter story was one for the ages, good luck on Whitney!

AlanK: OMG! Great hike!
