Cy: Yes, in a way it does look like San Jacinto from that angle. I wonder what the elevation gain/mile is on snow creek? I guess I'll have to try to figure that out. On Borah it averaged about 1500 feet gain/mile, but the first couple of miles were about 2000 feet gain/mile.

My legs don't usually hurt too much after a hike these days, but going down the steep slope on Borah caused me to wake up the next day with pretty sore legs.

I've been having fun trying to do some state/county highpoints - it's helping me to see places that I've never been to. I'm hoping I find that perfect place to move to in about 7 years when I turn 55 and quit the 8 to 5 routine. Next month it's Elbert in Colorado and Wheeler Peak in New Mexico.

Kathy - Snow Creek is about 9000 ft of gain in a little less than six miles, with some sections being almost 2000 ft per mile.

Thanks for the info on Snow Creek - 9000 feet gain with an average gain of 1500+ feet per mile is a really tough climb, but at least you don't have to go back down it. I'd like to give Snow Creek a try, but I'm afraid it might be a bit too technical for me. Maybe next spring I'll get the courage to go check it out.

I noticed your Yellowstone pictures on Smugmug. I am heading up there for the first time later this year. Did you do any peak bagging or trekking while there?? I am looking for a nice challenging hike (class 3 or less) in Yellowstone or Teton. Any suggestions? .

hvydrt - I only spent a day in Yellowstone, so I just did the tourist loop through the park. I only did some short hikes to some of the sights along the drive, so I can't help with climbing suggestions. It's a really beautiful place - I was just amazed at what I saw just along the road. I didn't get down to Grant Teton Park, but I'll bet there are some great scrambles and climbs down there - probably better than some of the crumbly stuff in Yellowstone. Next year I'd like to go give Gannett Peak in Wyoming or Granite Peak in Montana a try but that will take more planning because I don't want to solo those, so I'll be headed back to that area of the Country to see some more I hope.

Had a cool scramble below the chair lift on Mt Baldy yesterday. It is less crowded if you go this way. Also you can take the chair lift on the way back. Has anyone done Baldy via the register ridge route.?
Can you believe they charge eight dollars for a senior just to descend 1300 ft. on the chair lift. The Palm Springs tram works out to about two dollars for the same distance. (and a lot less if you have an annual pass)
It was worth it after the sole of my boot separated from the rest of my boot.

I did Baldy this past Saturday. We went up via Baldy Flats route, went up to the peak then down devils backbone, then took the chair lift down. We parked a car in both locations which worked out perfectly.
When were you up there?

Avalanche peak; at east exit of YP. (so 2 hrs or less from Lake (the name for place where all the Lake Yellowstone (lodge, fishing bridge) stuff is. Hike is steep, rock is firm but mostly a scramble (zero need for rope/gear).

Tina - I parked at Icehouse Canyon at 4.15 am and walked up the Baldy road for extra elevation gain. I could not believe the number of cars parked on the road when I returned because the lot fills up early.
There were six cars at the Icehouse Canyon parking lot when I started.

you should have seened the peak, there were like 40 people up there, tarps and everything (people hanging out upt there).
