Hikin' jim is Comin' to Town

I'm going up the tram with a Sierra Club HPS group tomorrow. I think we're going to take the 8:30 AM tram (based on our carpool meeting time). We're going to do Cornell, Jean, and Marion via XC routes. I'll be wearing my typical maroon nylon long sleeved shirt, Tilley hat, and light blue Osprey backpack. Say "hi" if you see me on the trail...

Ummmmmm, you tell me this now. I am doing san g. tomorrow, i won't get to finally meet you. this makes me sad, i would have liked to have finally met you.

I am reading that bug repellant is a must right now on San G. Can either of you give me the scoop on San G/Vivian Crk permits? I plan to go next Saturday and figured this time of year was not highest season so it would be OK to show up to the ranger station 6-7 AM for them. Also Tina, could you tell me if there is still water on the trail?

I hope you both have nice hikes tomorrow on your respective mountains. Jim yours sounds interesting.

The Ranger station does not open until 8:00 AM!

On Saturdays, the station now opens at 7:00 AM. There are always a few permits that are held for same day. If they run out of permits -- which they will so get there well before 7:00 -- you can always go up the Momyer Creek Trail or one of the other fantastic trails in the SGW.

It's best to apply for a Vivian Cr. Tr. permit at least a month in advance this time of year. It's a very popular trail.

There should be water at Vivian Creek Camp, Halfway Camp, and High Creek Camp, but check out the SGWA board for more current info: http://members.boardhost.com/sgva/index.html?1176529379.

I am reading that bug repellant is a must right now on San G.

On Saturday I regretted not packing bug repellent for an overnight at Johns Meadow. Are bug candles allowed in trail camps?

Open flames are supposed to be a no-no, but maybe a candle would fly. However, I've always heard that bug candles don't really work. Head nets and DEET, baby.

Sorry for the delay, just now seeing this. there is still water on the trail. i don't know the trail enough to tell you exactly where it is but you have water between high creek and half way camp.
LOTS of bugs...i used repellant and still got bit four times.
