Cornell Peak

General Palm Springs area.

Hello Kathy, Great pictures. I have had my eye on cornell peak for some time. Last week I was on the main trail to San Jacinto peak from the tramway and I saw a gentleman coming up the hill not on the regular trail, just after Wellman Divide. I asked him about the route, and he said it is the Sid Davis route/shortcut? Not on the map. Is the topo map and route you posted on the message the "sid davis route?" or is this just an route you created on your day hike?

Thanks and I always enjoy reading your posts.

I'm not completely clear on what route people are talking about when they say the "Sid Davis Route", but I think it means leaving the main trail that goes to Round Valley about 1/2 mile from the Ranger Station where the trail crosses the stream and heading more directly out to Tamarack Valley. There are use trails going that route.

From Tamarack Valley the old trail takes you to up to a little over 10,000 feet where it intersects with the existing trail that runs from Wellman's Divide to the summit of San Jacinto. The old trail isn't a nice clear trail like the existing one but it is still mostly there.

These routes are not nice groomed trails like the trail that takes you to Round Valley, on to Wellman's Divide, and then to the summit of San Jacinto - they fade in and out; so they are easy to lose and you will likely get scratched up a bit in the overgrown sections.

Sid Davis Canyon

Postby halhiker » Wed Jul 09, 2008 6:50 pm

Sid Davis Canyon is the canyon that leaves the trail just before you cross the logs to go over Long Creek. The trail follows the creek on the right (north) side and it pretty easy to follow. Once you come out toward Tamarack Valley stay right near Cornell Peak and you can pick up what is commonly called the Ranger Trail. This trail joins the main trail below the saddle separating Jean Peak and San Jacinto.

This way is quite a bit shorter than the main trail so I haven't taken the main trail since I can remember. Route founding is not easy and I don't know if I've ever taken exactly the same steps while doing this hike.

I do, however, highly recommended it to any adventurous hiker.

First Skyline now Sid Davis/Old Trail.......you people just don't get it. The "Old Trail" was abandoned to allow habitat away from people traffic for the deer on the mountain. But then nothing seems to be more important to this board than to get someone to listen to them, no matter the impact!

Nope, just a person expressing an opinion. Maybe this area should not be discussed on the message board? Freedom of speech has its downsides, but silence can also be dangerous.

 Oh, OK.

The person was so abrupt and so vicious without any attempt at reasonableness that I assumed that it was a troll.

I'm so sorry. I wasn't aware we were now doing things to protect deer. When did they become an endangered species? :?

Sorry, I wasn't aware that traveling off a maintained trail was not permitted in that area. I must have missed that rule.
