She'll be crawlin' round the mountain when she comes

Howdy All :-)

On May 31, I did my second annual Skyline hike before speaking at a sports medicine conference in Palm Springs the following day. Last year (the first annual pre-talk Skyline hike), I managed to fall off the trail before Flat Rock and impale myself on a cactus. This earned me the rather unfortunate nickname of "cactus ass."

This year I hiked Skyline as an affirmation of still being alive after my hiking misadventure in February. The goal was to hike Skyline mindfully and savor the experience. Karin Meyer was kind enough to accompany me as I made my way slowly up the trail. My left ankle is stiff, painful and doesn't have normal range of motion due to scaring/damage from the fracture/dislocation. Combined with my multiple lumbar fusions, it made my hiking style very interesting :-)

We were passed by numerous people who were focused on their time. Prior to my injury, I timed myself as well, so this Skyline was a very different experience.

At about 8000 feet, I heard a voice call out "She's BACK!" It was our own wonderful Scott Scott who was one of the many caring people on this board who visited me in the hospital. He was hiking with a group of extremely fit individuals (triathletes, cyclists, etc.) who also knew Karin.

It was fabulous to come up the final switchbacks through the rocks. I limped up the ramp and was greeted warmly by the employees of the mountain station before we made our way up to the tram bar to enjoy celebratory beers. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Congrats on your successful recovery, I was very surprised to look up & see you back already, on this tough trail!
Most people would probably never attempt it again, after what you've been through, but, once wilderness gets "in your veins", it's almost impossible to to stay away.

Your one tough cookie, hope to see you in the forest this summer!

Holy, cow, Ellen! lol. You mad woman!

Most people would start on the nature trail at the top of the tram to rehab a busted ankle, but not you; you go and do Skyline of all things. Omigosh.

I'm going to have to buy all your books just in hopes 1% of your tenacity and prowess will rub off on me somehow.

Go Ellen!

That was a very quick initial recovery period! I think I can divine your secret strategy from your postings:

1. You kept your cardio training going even during your downtime.

2. You carefully monitored the range of motion as you reintroduced hiking.

3. You followed the hike with some good, cold beer.

Am I close?! Of course, follow-through is crucial, so steps 1 and 2 are irrelevant without step 3!

Happy to hear you're back. How did the brief downhills feel? More importantly, how has if felt since the hike? In any case, CONGRATS!

Howdy Z,

Dude, you have a second career as a physical therapist or founder of a microbrew :-) I can see it now "Skyline Ale."

Possible Ad:
So, you've just hiked Skyline. Now you wish you'd just set your alarm for 4 AM and had a friend come over and beat you with chains. The perfect analgesic -- Skyline Ale!!!

On the serious side, yes, I kept the cardio training going and was very careful transitioning to hiking. It also helped to have a physical therapy assistant (Karin) literally watching my back on the way up.

Howdy Tina,

I look forward to meeting you on the trail, too :-) However, you'll need to drop to Warp 1 to say hi as you pass.

Thanks for your kind words -- I love this forum and am ectastic to be BACK!

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Ya know Ellen, I would tell those people along the trails to ease off just a smidge with how hard they beat you with those chains. That you're ok with it but just not so HARD that they draw blood :D
