I am planning on going up from the museum to the tram tomorrow with 3 friends. Can you drop off a car at the tram station at 3:30 in the am or is there a locked gate for the road? Thanks .........

Trail conditions at the tram

Postby juguetico » Sat May 24, 2008 4:17 pm

I came down the tram at 1pm. the cloud ceiling was at 7k. It was snowing lightly since about 10am. The visibility was poor at the higher elevations. Snow was heavier above Wellman's Devide. The trail was visible from tram to Wellman's but disappeared after that to the peak. I don't know how much snow has come down since. The temps were below 30 most of the day (my water nozzle kept freezing). Charly

I will be heading up tomorrow but probably later than most of you. I have a dear friend who lives in PS and i will be staying with her. She is an avid trail runner so we will leave together probably around 8am. We'll probably just go to the tram since she does not have winter gear for hiking. And maybe, just maybe if we are fast enough we will catch up to other board members?... I'll keep my eyes peeled for happy hikers! :D

Yes, thanks for the info. Monday looks like it will be the nicest day of the weekend, so I'm going to wait until Monday to hike.

Howdy, I have been watching the board here for quite awhile. Been coming up to San J. & surrounding peaks for a few years now. I am pretty impressed with the info that gets passed along here. I'll be heading up the Tram on Monday & will probaly spend a couple days in Round Valley hanging out and wandering around. Anza Borrego is getting a little warm. One of these day's I'll be pestering one of you Vets to let me tag along when you do the Cactus to Clouds. Awesome board!

The great thing about this BB is that we will never know how many journies could have turned out to be the worst day in someones life but not for the priceless info we share. We hear about the bad ones and there are too many. We also hear about the good ones too and there are too few. I guess it is a code we carry out of respect for the great outdoors and it is contagious. When our paths cross, we share. Information, water & food perhaps if you need it, a friendly smile or an "ataboy" (girl). It makes this wonderful place we live in even better. We really care about each other.

Let's all carry this attitude into our daily lives. Practice random acts of kindness.

Amen juguetico. And thanks again for the valued information. You saved us from a trip that would have been less than the usual wonderful experience. SanJack

Went up again this morning, what a difference a week makes! Left at 5.55am and it was 59F. Cairn at 4300' in 2:45hrs; Flat Rock in 4:28hrs. Realized I had a shot at breaking 6 hours, but my quads were very tired at Coffman's Crag and ended up with 6:04hrs. Two hours less than last Sunday. It was 35F at the Tram station, the trees above CC have a Christmas tree-like layer of snow, very pretty.

Tina made it up about 15 minutes before me. Overtaken by Fernando moving fast at 3000', Doreen coming down at 5000', Nano (Mike) towards the top (and at the bar, prior to his heading up to the summit), owl and his three friends at Flat Rock then again on the Tram coming down. Beautiful day, lovely hike and met delightful people on the mountain.
