Camping/Bivy Locations

Several on the board have commented on the importance of a reasonable night's sleep before attempting C2C. For those of us who live a good distance away (too far to drive prior to a truly early start)...

Where are good locations to camp/bivy the night before a C2C hike:

- In a tent?

- In a car? Would the museum tolerate sleeping in a car in the parking lot? How aggressive is Palm Springs about harassing people sleeping in cars?

What are the rules about camping off the dirt roads near Snow Creek Road? We had good luck there this weekend, but weren't really sure if this was allowed, tolerated, or illegal.

Is there any BLM land in the immediate area?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

For various C2C hikes, I have bivied in three places in the Palm Springs area, all having "Motel 6" in their names.

Sleeping in my vehicle last Friday night around the corner from the museum was a 3.5 out of 10 on the Urban Bivy scale.
The primary reasons for the low rating are a "Stealth Factor Required" of 2 and "Noise Level" of 3. Museum event, valet drivers, horse and buggy combo, and more cars than I expected. On the positive side, "Risk of Crazy People Bothering You" factor scored high, an 8. One of my personal favorite categories, "Access to Coffee & Beer", a 10.

There are three rest areas on I-10 right before Palm Springs:

They have a time limit for "resting." (It's okay to "rest" but not okay to "sleep.") I would set an alarm, stay at one for a few hours, then drive to another and "rest" again. I've used this method on I-5 through Central California many times.

There is also a Wal-Mart near Gene Autry and Ramon.
