I can understand why a troll would hang out on a board like this. My guess is that they aim to drive good people away. It started to happen on the Whitney Board a couple of years ago before it got a diligent moderator. People get tired of being abused every time they post and some eventually stay away. It also alters the course of discussions and dilutes the flow of useful and interesting information. I think it's an example of a pathetic little person enjoying a sense of power that is otherwise unavailable.

What is nice is that these message boards are well-maintained. Trolls do not last long. I have actually changed my own thinking on the subject. instead of avoiding getting drawn into conversations with them, go ahead and engage. It exposes them all the faster and soon they are gone.

Ashley Simpson!!! I have to admit, in some sick, sick way I almost liked our troll. His unswerving verve, his tireless energy, his selection of female names gleaned from his collection of seventies porn movies ... It's just so delightfully demented that a guy would go out of his way to attack ... a hiking board? It's practically Dada-esque. I guess he will have to move on to crocheting dot com or tupperware collectors of america ....but I feel kinda , almost, nearly sad that we lost him. Every mountain needs a troll?

I have been monitoring this forum for a few months to learn as much as I could about skyline before getting in over my head. I hiked on Sat 5/10 with Verdi and the ODC crew. I would have to rate the hike a success -- everyone made it home safe. Although 1 person went down from flat rock due to heat symptoms, I would not consider that a rescue because he did make it out under his own power.

At the time, I thought your comments and bet on how many people would require rescue was pretty negative and mean spirited. However, I kept that thought in my head as motivation throughout the 8000 ft gain to the tram. So thanks for being my inspiration, in a way.

Tina -- it was great meeting you at the tram. Everyone -- keep up the lively banter and sharing of info. It is much appreciated.

Janice (or Crystal or a dozen other IDs) showed up last week on the SGWA Message Board as "summit." He/she got out of hand quickly and has had all of "her" posts excised.

I pity him in a way. He is so hate filled. His single purpose seems to be to dump his hate on everyone else. Someone who lives for destuction is not well. I try to remember to pray for him from time to time, the poor guy.

The response to Jim and some of the other posts were mindless sniping. The worst stuff was bigoted or racist drivel. None of it is worth repeating. No need to give the guy a charge by letting him see it in print again.
