Skyline "T.R." (Trash Report) March 15th

General Palm Springs area.

Howdy Cynthia :D

Thank goodness I can always count on you for a laugh

Thanks for packing out the trash. As you pointed out, combining a product containing multiple stimulants while climbing Skyline is not a good idea :? unless you want to see how high you can get your heart rate and blood pressure

I have a full-proof  weight loss plan for the wimpy "fat b-----d" who left the trash: summit San J in the snow, break your ankle on the descent, crawl around for 4 hours, and spend two nights in sub-freezing temperatures in the San J bunkbed and breakfast with only sardines, crackers and near frozen cream of chicken soup to eat

Ellen

Gosh, Ellen, whatever makes you think that would work? :D

Out of curiosity, if this isn't too prying, how much weight did you lose during your stay at the San Jacinto Spa and Health Club?

Jim,
what can i say?...

after a night of bivy, i came out looking like a once famous out-of-work actress, complete with make-up!

bottom line... if you ever have to bivy i hope it's with a partner with the same wit as Dave.

Hi, Norma, hope I didn't sound like I was bagging on you. You guys did great. I've had to do an unplanned bivvy on three occasions, on one of which I became hypothermic the minute I stopped doing jumping jacks. Hint: Do not wear cotton in a rainstorm in December.

I'm very impressed that:
a) You didn't do something rash like trying to complete the hike "no matter what," risking an uncontrolled, rapid descent on ice.
b) and that you were able to bivvy and then hike out the next day.
That takes a lot of fortitude and quick improvisation.

Once famous actress? Uh, oh, should I recognize your name? I enjoy movies/TV/stage, but I'm not much with names. Sorry.

Howdy Jim,

I lost about 3 lb. I estimate that half was muscle (from the trauma and then lying around in the hosptial) and half fat. Not a recommended way to lose weight  On the positive side, I was able to eat Walt's incredible barbecue without worrying about the calories.

Wow. I'm surprised that it was so little. Well, 3 lbs seems little to me but then I'm 6'0", 210lbs. Good for you.

I do know about muscle mass lost when not able to do normal activity. When I fx'd my rt. leg, I had to stay off of it for 6 (8?) weeks. It looked funky compared to my left leg. I'm glad you didn't have to go through that! It was also funky to learn how to drive with my left leg, but that's another story. "Lock up the brakes? Who me?"

Jim,
go back and look at the pix. Dave photo shopped Kim Basinger's face in the picture of me! he did catch some sleep that night. maybe we know who he was dreaming about?...

back to reality... we were proud that we came through the bivy well too. we knew continued hiking in the dark in those conditions was risking injury. so the decision at that moment was correct. it did feel surreal to be actually doing it. i tried laying down, but i could not stop shivering. so lighting a small and safe fire became necessary. sitting there in front of the fire and gathering wood all night to feed it kept me from becoming hypothermic. by the way, we cleared up the area and left no trace.

hearing the stories about other hikers who became lost, stuck, or injured this winter, impresses upon us just how fortunate we were.

happy trails!

That explains things. I ran into Kim at a club the other evening. When I said "Hi, you must be Norma. I'd like to hear more about your unplanned bivy on Skyline" she called a large bouncer.

Well, off to the chiropractor.

NormaR. I spent a long time wondering if that was your face on that picture. I really went back and forth comparing them. He did a good job. Pretty funny of Dave. FIGHT ON

Well, if someone asked me about my skivies and what's myline, I'd call the bouncer too.
