Santa Rosas - Cactus Spring Trailhead to Sheep Mountain.

I drove into LA all week last week to take a continuing ed class and didn't get move my legs much, so I needed a hike yesterday - I'm back in training mode for some tough spring/summer trips I want to do and I'm way behind the curve. Sheep Mountain had been on my mind since we did the trek out to Martinez Mountain in December 2006, so I decided to give it a try. I didn't get started until 8:20 in the morning and it was a bit warm in the beginning, but the breeze picked up and it turned out to be a beautiful day. The flowers are starting to come out and Horsethief Creek is flowing nicely. There's a really low flow of water at Cactus Spring - I wouldn't count on it for long.

I left the trail at Cactus Spring and headed northerly over bumps 4678 and 5067 on my way to Sheep Mountain (5141'). The first signature in the summit register was Cy's and it was from 1967.

Horsethief Creek was the nicest spot along the way - I took a long break there on the way out and soaked my feet in the water. Overall, it was a really nice hike and wonderful therapy after the hellish commute all week.

Some pictures I took:

Nice pictures Kathy. was the summit register a small spiral notepad. Do you remember the name/s next to mine? Was it more yellowed and wrinkled than my face :)

Thanks Kathy - I still keep in touch with all these old time hikers. He will get a kick out of this. Hiking sure does build up lasting relationships. The Sierra Club philosophy is lots of dirt road driviing and bag every little bump no matter how small :)

Cy, you hiking legend! I sure am glad I've gotten the chance to hike with you and spend some time chatting. I sure hope that going forward I keep the bug alive as strongly as you've got yours.

Look forward to seeing you on the route next weekend.
