Another Missing Hiker Backpacker

Postby lilbitmo » Sat Mar 01, 2008 5:54 pm

I know this is the San Jacinto Blog site but did anyone hear anything that they can share about missing hiker/backpacker in the Cucamonga Wilderness?
I went up the Bear Canyon Trail to the summit of Baldy today and LA Sherrifs/San Gabriel SARS and the command post were putting teams into the wilderness via helicopter all morning. I was extremely late coming down as conditions were a tad bit icy form the wind and it turned to mush by noon.

Anyways I spoke to two SARS guys in the morning before the hike and they only knew that someone was missing since Wednesday. If anyone has anything please post so we can help get the word out.

Thanks lilbitmo

Missing hiker/body found

Postby Rick M » Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:11 pm

My condolences to Mr. Bruner’s family and friends. I don’t know if the accident occurred in Falling Rock Canyon or not but it can be a nasty place in the winter. Back in the seventies we used to go there for ice climbing practice when conditions were right on the short waterfalls. On one occasion, we decided to go all the way up and summit Sugarloaf. On the way down my friend slipped and after numerous attempts at self-arrest and tumbles, he stopped himself five feet above one of the short waterfalls. Problem with self-arresting was the slick hard water ice and the many rocks protruding that would grab your axe or you and send you flying. And from my experiences in other north facing slopes and gullies in Ice House Canyon, they all seem to get “iced up”…as reflected in a Sierra Club outing I was on up Bighorn Peak with a descent down one of those gullies that almost resulted in the death of one of the members in the group in a slip.
Diffinitely NOT A PLACE FOR THE INEXPERIENCED

Unfortunate Results

Postby lilbitmo » Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:03 pm

Thanks to all those who were able to find out the information I requested. Unfortunately the results were tragic ones.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Brunner.

Let's all be especially safe out there. That's 2 hikers and three skiiers in the San Gabriels in the past two months.

Conditions are still dangerous in most of the upper canyons on Baldy and the Cucamonga Wilderness. Be safe, be smart.

Hope to see all of you on the trail someday.
