Unfortunately, even bad ones. :(

But who can resit "Baristo"? I usually go up from Ramon Drive, so we cross Baristo on the way to the trailhead.

Hey Alan, what makes you come up from Ramon? I've gone from both the museum and Ramon, but I find the museum route really fun on the way up - I like the pure rock surface. I know you and your son move really fast - is it that you prefer to maintain a rapid pace? (I have to say that my pace coming up from the museum is anything but fast!) Just curious. I always like to hear other perspectives besides my own.

Hi ZippetyDude,

I find that I get my pulse way to high trying to hurry up the museum route. The Ramon side is a much nicer wake up call on the knees and thighs early on. The museum promotes a quicker pace for me that I pay for later in the route.

We have a group coming in from Texas in a couple weeks so Saturday is our scouting day for the Indian Canyons. Sunday is open for a hike up C2C. What time is everyone going?

Let me know and perhaps we're in!

Skyline this Sunday

Postby Cy Kaicener » Sat Feb 09, 2008 11:19 am

Doreen, Tina and I left the museum at 6 am and were at the top of the shaded switch backs by 8 am. Thats 3000 feet of gain. Doreen and Tina were going up to the snow level. Anyone that can keep up with Doreen is good Skyline material. We will probably do a repeat next Saturday. A lot of the snow seems to be melting. We may not have to wait as long as next month to get up to the tram. We met one other guy called Joe headed up to the tram. He said that he got up to the tram last week, and promised us a trip report.
Tina also works at the Press Enterprise. It was great to have her along.

Cy - can you give me some info on how I can identify the, "shaded switch backs"? I think I've made it to them before a few times but am not entirely sure. It would be a useful measurement to get an idea of your pace. I'll probably go up tomorrow around 11am and if you guys head up again next weekend may join you.

(btw - apologies if my photo is obnoxiously large. Took it on the Museum Trail a few months ago, no idea how to shrink it to a thumb nail for this site)

Hi Cy, Doreen, Tina, and everybody else. I'm that guy Joe. It's nice to meet you on the trail.

I've never written a trip report before, but I'll try.

I started up from the museum between 6:30 and 7:00. Once I reached the picnic tables, I drank some Gatorade. After that, I continued up. Then I met Cy. We talked for a little while. It's amazing how many times you've done that hike! Same for Doreen, too! It's funny how many people talk about my shoes when I go hiking...

I continued up (probably through the shaded switchbacks) and past 4300. The stones that say 4300 looked kind of messed up. Maybe the wind and rain from last weekend? At that point, I was hungry, but I couldn't find any nice, shady places to eat, so I continued hiking. At this point, the food I ate yesterday caused pain in my stomach, so I stopped for a short time before continuing. Then I ate a banana.

After that, I met Doreen and Tina. I think I worried them, hiking alone.

I continued hiking, but the weather was really hot. Once I reached the snow, I stopped to drink some Gatorade and eat some pita bread and sausages.

I continued hiking. A lot of the snow had melted since last week, and the trail looked quite different. I like it better when its covered with snow. Unfortunately (I guess), most of the steps made by people last weekend were gone, so I had to make my own.

I continued up, occasionally leaving the trail and returning to it. A little before the traverse, I put on crampons. The past two times I did this hike, I didn't need crampons or an ax, so I thought maybe I'm carrying that stuff for nothing. Not this time, though. If not for the crampons and ax, I would've turned around today. I continued hiking, and eventually, I turned and headed straight up. (I think I went up a little too early, though.) I continued up, and it became really icy.

Finally, I arrived at Long Valley. I carelessly dropped a crampon as I was walking toward the tram, so I searched for about 15 minutes before finding it. Some people asked me to take a picture of them, then they took a picture of me. They said they'd email it to me tomorrow.

The line for the tram was really long. I waited for a long time; as I waited, I ate some pita bread and hummus. I finished about 5:00.

It was a nice hike today; I didn't have to rush, but I wasn't forced to walk slowly either. Now, I've eaten a big meal, cleaned myself, and since I'm sleepy, I'll go to bed.

Nice to meet you Cy, Doreen, Tina.

Good hiking.
