Skyline this Sunday

General Palm Springs area.

LOL - well, I'm neither a troll nor sinister! "Lurker" is a common term on another sport board I've been frequenting, and posting on, for years. Someone who reads but doesn't participate.

How about, "a formerly non-registered person with interest"?

edit: not too impressive; major typo on my second post here...lol

You're right, "lurker" is the correct term at present. It just doesn't sound very flattering!

Tina, you're right too, it's a lot slower and harder on snow than on a regular dirt trail. When I do San G in the snow, I prefer to go when the snow is packed up to South Fork Meadows or even to Dry Lake. That way I can wear my Kahtoolas and run for the first 3 to 6 miles, making that first part much quicker. Plugging along in snowshoes - even those made for running - takes a very long time.

On the plus side, it is so much fun to run back down the chute to the bowls, bounding along with giant 10 foot strides! A couple of winters ago, I took off my windbreaker, sat down on it, and tried out glissading! I must have looked like a madman, sliding with my butt on a windbreaker, holding the sleeves like reigns! Anyway, it was fun! It's always an adventure.

event / road closures

Hi guys (gals)
Here's what the paper says,
Palm Cyn Dr. from Arenas to Ramon, 3-10am
and the section from Baristo to Ramon from 3am - 6pm

Here's a general map, you may have to scroll a bit south.

I would come into town on Palm Cyn, turn right on Alejo, make a quick left on Baristo to Museum. It's just a thought, but personally, I would at least come down the N Lykken tr (veer south at the intersection where the painted words on the rock re. Long Valley) if not go up & down it instead of the Museum tr. I think it's a crappy trail to go down. Of course you'll have an extra mile or so to get back to the Museum, but your quads will thank you. It adds approx. 1/2 mile.

Have fun,

From your directions the 111 to Palm Canyon is the reasonable way to get there. You can also just stay on N. Palm Canyon and make a right on W. Tahquitz Way (a bit more direct).

Hi Tina. It sounds more confusing than it is. What ss is saying is that the congestion may block the way unless you take an almost identical route, but scoot over one block to your right as you're coming in.

Click on the map link ss posted, then tell it to search for

101 N Museum Dr, Palm Springs, CA

It will open a pop up window so you can look back and forth from this to the map. The green arrowhead is the museum. If you're facing the museum, the trail will be on your right. (It's pretty obvious once you're there - just walk over to the right side of the parking lot.)

If you use the little hand to grab the map and scroll just a little, you can pull the map so that the green arrow goes right to the edge of the bottom of your screen. Look towards the top, and you can see where Alejo cuts in from N Palm Canyon Drive. You'll just turn there, then make the first left onto Belardo. Note that Belardo curves to the right just before the museum. At that point you're almost there, as it is just turning into Museum Drive. Once you see the museum (it will be on your right) - you can flip a u-turn (now it's on your left! :) ) and park on the street across from the museum. Some folks park in the museum lot and I've never heard of it being a problem, but at 6:00 a.m. you'll have your choice of places to park. Later, when you're leaving, there will probably be a ton of congestion farther into town, so you'll probably want to leave by the same route you come.

Hope that helps! Incidentally, did you decide Saturday or Sunday? The first part of the trail can be confusing, and it's nice when there are other people out there. If you don't see anyone, do not despair. The rule of thumb I use (when I'm doing it in the dark) is when I see a split, stay to the right. If you see white spray painted dots on rocks, they mean you're going the right way. You can see back down to Palm Springs during the part that's confusing, so it's impossible to get lost there. It can be frustrating if you find yourself going back down when you've accidentally gotten on a little spur or onto the trail coming up from the left over at Ramon, but that's about the extent of it.

Have fun! If you're going Saturday, I might bump into you. I'm still waiting for a trail report on San G to see which way I ought to go this weekend. How nice for us, that we get to choose between a cold, snowy trail or a nice, warm summer-like trail, either one just a little way from home. Amazing, huh?

Tina - I live in Palm Springs. If you don't want to remember street names, just take the 111 off the 10, keep going into Palm Springs, hang a right at the Hyatt then left at the T junction (one block). It's really simple and you can't miss the Museum.
