Page 44 of the linked issue of the Sierra Echo, the quarterly newsletter of the Sierra Peaks Section of the Sierra Club, has an obituary for Bob Pickering.

In January 2017, Ellen posted a candid report of how she and Sally encountered a difficult situation on Register Ridge on Mt. Baldy, and called for rescue. Bob, who knew neither of them, posted some comments which some of us thought were unfairly critical.

Bob died in July, while solo climbing Mt. Washington in Oregon. Below is a brief media account.

The obituary is complimentary, as obituaries generally are and should be. It does mention that he was opinionated.

Interesting Ed, I remember reading that post from Ellen's mishap, and thought, he knows what he's talking about, but it seems rather harsh and overly judgemental, (especially considering Ellen and friends experience). I've meet folks like this, and appreciate their knowledge, but wouldn't want to spend any time, including outdoors, with them. As you and others know from unsettling outdoor experiences, that there are times the rules need to be disregarded, and possibly doing something dangerous, but needed, (even being humble at times). scott

I met Bob on the trail up to Shepherd's Pass in the Sierra Nevada (he had a hiking partner). He was helpful and seemed to be a good person on the trail, but online? He clashed with some.

He was active on the WhitneyZone forum, which is now defunct.
