Visiting Palm Springs and need trail running info

Postby wasatchrunner » Thu Jan 31, 2008 10:03 am

I posted to this board last year when I was going to be in Palm Springs. However our trip got cancelled and I have lost the info I had gathered. I need info on trails that are close to town that I can run. If anyone could give be directions to some good trailheads I would appreciate it. Is there any good trail maps of the area that I could purchase somewhere? I will be in town the middle of March for 5-6 days.

Welcome back!

I remember your post from last year, so I did a search (go back to the main menu and click on your name - it will show all the posts you have made, and since there are only 3, it will be easy for you to find) and it's still there, along with all the responses.

This year will be somewhat different, in that there's a ton of snow right now, and we may still have a good bit when you come in March. Thus, going up to a peak (San G or San J) would probably require snowshoes and/or crampons. Still, all the desert trails will be clear, and both Skyline and the PCT will be clear up to around 6000. Hope you have fun while you're here. Maybe we'll meet on the trail!

Incidentally, here's a good map of the wilderness area.

zippetydude - Thanks for the idea. Don't know why I didn't think of that, I'm a little slow sometimes. Can't wait to run on dry dirt again. Salt Lake has been a little snowy this year, in fact it is coming down right now.

KathyW - Thanks for the link, awesome site.

Hi Wasatch,

There's plenty of good ones out here, how far do you want to run?

A great 9 miler starts at the Garstin tr (off Bogert tr road, right after crossing the bridge), in south PS, at the end of a small cul-de-sac on left, climb 1k ft., shorty after leveling off, take the 1st right 1/2 mile to 4 way jct., go straight (climb) to another interscetion (1 1/2 miles later) go straight (south).
You'll come to a wash, go right here (or you may get lost), you'll come to a small palm oasis, Fern Cyn, right after exiting this, look for trail on left.
After approx. 1 1/2 miles there's another junction of washes, go right (north), for another couple miles to a small community, alone the brick fence (wash is on your left), back to car.

You need to be trail savvy & have good sense of direction & carry lots of water.

Easier ones are the south Lykken at the end of Mesquite Rd (can be a 7 miler if you do a loop & return on pavement (S Palm Cyn drive), or go to far picnic benches & return)

ss - Thanks for the info. I will only have time for 6-7 mile runs while I'm there. However I am hoping to squeeze in one 10-15 miler.
