Some hikers have been stranded in snow on Skyline. I dont think it was Kevin Trieu who said he might go up there yesterday. He has done Denali

Note to hikers...If Doreen and Cy aren't hiking the trail you have to figure there is a good reason.

The press enterprise reported they rescured 3 marines off skyline trail. All seem to be fine.

Unfortunately I didn't see the PE article. I checked the Riverside Rescue site for their report, but it didn't say why the Marines needed to be rescued, just that they were. I would like to know more about what happened (i.e. why they required a rescue) if anyone knows more. It's always helpful to know so one can avoid making the same mistakes ...

A group of us were thinking the same thing. We wished there was a place to get detailed, accurate info on events when hiking goes wrong. Even to the point where the rescuees give their account as to what happened. Very much the learning expereince and if nothing else maybe just a good read.
Rescuers of the couple a year ago who survived off the PCT hikers old camp belongings said he had left notes on his last days stuck in the snow. I'm sure they were very private, but have always been curious as to what may have been going through his mind.

I'm going to guess it was the ice, and they did not have crampons and ice axes. It would surprise me if it was anything else, given that it's winter, and these were marines. Any other issues, and I think they would have enough fitness and determination to reach the tram.

my 2 cents

First, they were very fortunate they were able to be rescued at that time of day & in that location!
2nd, being a casual Cheesehead myself (from Wisconsin) they should have be able to handle the cold, they may have wanted to end it all since the Packers didn't make the Superbowl?
Like Perry mentioned, my guess is snow & ice, but, your never going to find any trace of a trail in the trees with snow if you start at 11am! The trail faces east, it gets darker fast in the afternoon, & icy too.
Those fluted ridges & chutes are steep & dangerous this time of year, as at least 2 other parties have already found out this winter.

And....their damn lucky a cell phone worked!

Glad their safe, let's hope it's the last rescue for a while.
