I'll be heading up the tram next Saturday morning (Jan 12), anyone else going up?

Unless we have a heat wave roll through before the clouds clear there should be a whole bunch of new snow up there. I live in Palm Springs and it has rained or sprinkled here since about 10:00pm last night.

I hope to give South Fork a try over in the San G wilderness maybe one day this week. I'll post pics if I go.

I don't know the San J wilderness as well, so I'm going to wait for you intrepid explorers to pack down a path before I try San J in the snow. I hope someone will post some photos!

This is what is being reported:

Mount Baldy Ski area is reporting 3 feet of new snow.

Big Bear Ski areas are reporting 12 to 18 inches of new snow.

Palm Springs Tramway is reporting 8 inches of snow at Long Valley.

Those figures are really different for fairly similar elevations. Did the storm lose steam after it hit the San Gabriels?

Actually, the tram is higher. Looking at the radar pictures last night it looked like the strength of the storm was heading more to the north of here. A lot a places got a significant amount of rain and here in the desert we got very little, less than 1/4 inch in La Quinta and i think PS got around 1/3 of an inch.

Might be up there Saturday, too. Missed New Years on the summit due to a nasty cold and fever.

The Tram & Round Valley areas display the classic rain shadow effect; they are on the eastern side of the mountain, and the San Jacintos are the last mountain range in the west-to-east travel pattern of storms, so all the moisture drops out.

Not much rain in the OC either - wet on the ground in the mornings all weekend long, but it dried out pretty quickly.

Long Valley Ranger Station says 5 to 18 inches in Long Valley and up to 36 inches higher up. Hopefully, not too much will have melted off by Saturday. I'll be going up on the first tram on Saturday to play.

A beautiful day out there today. The snowshoes came in handy after Round Valley. I didn't see hardly anyone all the way to the summit but as I was working my way back down to Miller Saddle there were about 20 people headed up to the summit, lots of people snowshoeing around down at Round Valley, and I ran into Perry as he was headed out to do some snowshoeing when I got back to the Long Valley Ranger Station. The tram station was really crowded when I got back there - lots of families having fun in the snow.

Some pics I took:

That was a nice surprise to see you there Kathy.

It's easy to snowshoe to the peak right now. More footprints and more consolidation of snow than I expected.
