anyone hiking to the peak this weekend?

myself and two other buddies are heading up this weekend, i heard there is a limit on how many permits are given for overnight stays, should i be concerned that we may not get one?

do you think a 3season tent will be good enough up there?

No and maybe. Right now the wind looks like its going to stay down so that should be okay. Lows will be 25º-28º in the Tamarisk area. I'd suggest a call to the rangers station to verify the wind conditions.

Hi,
I'd bring a small shovel, as you may need to dig out an area for your tent, there's a good chance there's still 6" to over a foot on the ground.

And, snowshoes if you want to make your attempt on San Jac reasonable, ( as there could be a couple feet + above 10K ft.

we will be leaving from the tram. on the first one up. so i guess 8am

Dani: Just pick up your permit at the Ranger Station in Long Valley - you shouldn't have problems getting one. There should be a beaten path to Round Valley and maybe all the way to the peak - most of the time a 3-season tent will work in the winter in So. California - you'll just have to do some extra work setting it up in the snow to make sure it is secure. Let us know what conditions you find out there.

the cold weather was expected but the amount of snow was so beautiful to see.i had trained prior to this trip but i didnt realize how much the elevation took a toll on my breathing. the trail to round valley was easy to follow. my friends and i had a fun and challenging time looking for the trail to the peak. we used my gps and created our own trail to about 9100 ft. we saw the korean-american hiking group and there were going 3x faster than us, so we followed them. whats interesting about that group was that their ages ranged from 57-77. it was so inspiring..
anyhow. there were parts were snow shoes helped cause the snow was knee to thigh high and parts where we took them off because the people before us packed the snow. Other than my shortness of breath and not wearing gaters, it was a great trip.

Thanks for the update Dani and I'm glad you made it to the peak. I understand how hard it is to breath up high - it gets to me too.
