Snow

Postby Cy Kaicener » Wed Dec 05, 2007 12:08 pm

I have found that it is not too reliable in predicting snow or rain in advance. They are accurate in predicting temperatures however. After the snow has fallen they can measure it at Long Valley. I find that i have to take the tram up myself and either drop down a couple of hundred feet or gain a little to get somewhat of an idea. I expect a fair amount this weekend according to the other weather stations.

Let it snow

I think it will snow. I can feel it. And it's about time. The last few winters have been somewhat disappointing.

I'm just going to have to ride the tram up this weekend to check out that snow.

conditions

Well it rained for several early mornings hours here in PS.
I just looked up at the east face of San Jac with my binocs, and can see no new snow.
There's probably some left from last weeks drop on the fluted ridges (the traverse in the trees), which can be risky if it freezes to ice.

The tramcams are a big blur from the moisture & clouds, and their weather page is for Dec 4th and lists 62 degrees at 12:50pm, (maybe they need to put the thermometer "outside" of the building!?)

Snow

Postby Cy Kaicener » Fri Dec 07, 2007 9:33 am

It seems like winds may be a problem higher up as well as ice under the new snow. The lower portions of Skyline are somewhat proected from wind. I will take the tram up later on Saturday after hiking a little way up Skyline.

Snow

Postby Cy Kaicener » Sun Dec 09, 2007 8:54 am

I was surprised that there was only about an inch of snow at Long Valley on Saturday morning. The temperature was supposed to be 18 degrees before sunrise with a high of 28 degrees plus winds.
Here are some interesting pictures of Anza Borrego taken by Jack Brauer
They are the eighth, nineth, tenth and eleventh ones.

He has a great photographic website.
PS I could not make it to Skyline because my car would not start when I stopped for a warm drink at Seven Eleven at Raquet Club drive. Jumper cables did not work because the wire connecting the starter came loose. I hiked up the tram road while a mechanic was working on my car at the Shell Station near the Tram road.
Did anyone else have an eventful day :)

Good Morning Cy,

Sorry to hear about your car troubles. I gather the Shell station got you going again. I haven't hike at all this weekend.

I joined a bunch of fellow BBQ competitors up at the Marine Base in 29 Palms and cooked for about 3,000 Marines and family members. It was a special day for the families with so many of their Marines deployed overseas. There was face painting, gifts, a Marine Band playing holiday music, Christmas trees, plenty of food and lots of happy faces.

We had about 1,100 pounds of Pulled Pork w/ Dirty Rice, Baked Beans, Red Potato Salad and of course Hot Dogs for the kids. It was a great chance for some of us to meet and talk with a great bunch of young famlies. My mother and I cooked about 450 lbs of the meat overnight in my larger smoker. The smell of BBQ was certainly in the air during the 13 hours of cooking.

I got to watch a master chef cook the Dirty Rice dish. It was amazing. One very large brazer pan gets 30 scrambled eggs, 3/4 pound of butter, 5 pounds of cooked beef, 5 pounds of chopped onions, 5 lbs of rice and 6 quarts of stock. That yields 125 servings. He had a 3 pan work area producing the rice continuously for several hours.

My hiking has to compete with my love of cooking for time.

Sure hope everyone had a safe and wonderful weekend.

Howdy Walt :D

Good on you, mate, for providing for our marines 8)

Howdy Cy :D

Sorry about your car troubles  Wish I'd been there to help out

It's awesome to see the snow covered mountains from Riverside. I'll be heading up Box Springs this afternoon -- at least the cold weather and wind will keep the rattlers off the trail

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Currently San Jacinto looks like it has snow down below 4,000ft. Sure does make for great pictures here in Palm Springs.
