I grew up in Idyllwild and used to hike all over the San Jacinto mountains in the 1970s. I'm going for a backpacking adventure there starting Thursday, May 12. It will be my first time in the San Jacintos since 1976 (40 years!) and I'm very excited.
We're experienced backpackers but getting old. We plan to take the tramway to Long Valley and proceed from there. I want to visit all my favorite haunts.
My questions:
1. Is this plan too ambitious? Thurs: Go to Round Valley the first day (only 2 miles) and acclimate. Friday: Go without packs to San Jacinto Peak, then return to Round Valley, get the packs, go to Hidden Lake, to Laws Camp, and then to Carramba. Saturday: Go back to Laws Camp, to Tahquitz Meadow, to Tahquitz Peak, to Saddle Junction, and to Humber Park (where some friends will pick us up and we'll spend the night in an Idyllwild motel). The Friday schedule might be too much. I'm thinking it's about 12 miles in all (although most of them will be downhill). And if we run into snow it will be slow going.
2. How much snow is on San Jacinto Peak and Tahquitz Peak? I know it snowed there this weekend.
I have recurring dreams of being in Carramba, a mystical place. I'm curious to see how the real location compares to my dreams after all these years.
