My 1st 2016 Skyline

Howdy All :)

The three amigas went up on Tues, Mar 8. As is typical this time of year, I started in shorts and t-shirt but carried warm layers, including mittens and of course. We also had poles and traction devices -- Marilyn used microspikes, I used Hillsounds and Sally used Kahtola aluminum crampons. Starting temperature was 51 and tram cam showed 4 to 6 inches of new snow.

First of all, THANK YOU and KUDOS to the folks who fixed the trail below the picnic tables. Sister Sally and miracle Marilyn kindly let me set the pace. It was a beautiful day -- the three Polar Bears us always feel better in cool/cold weather.

The first patches of snow appeared at Potato Chip Point (aka St. Florian's). We enjoyed Marilyn's persimmon bread and reduced fat Ruffles potato chips. From Flat Rock up, we hit pristine sticky snow. At the traverse, we all donned our traction devices. The snow was good -- not icy or slushy. I moved very slowly -- not wanting to risk hurting my repaired shoulder. We lost the route shortly before Coffman's and spent a half hour looking around. From Coffman's on up, the snow became deeper. My shoulder started screaming (muscle fatigue) with about 200 vertical to go -- I was surprised it didn't happen sooner. I passed on scrambling up the rocks to the tram as I use both arms to get to the view point. Engine Joe met us at Grubbs and offered to carry my day pack, I didn't argue

It was wonderful to see my tram family again -- it had been over two months since my last Skyline. After enjoying Angel's Demise IPA, we headed down (thanks for ride Joe) and met Sandy at the original Las Casuelas.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Great to hear you are back. Amazing return from such a serious injury. The xray made me flinch. I am afraid I am in a funk, icing a mysterious pain in my upper left calf.

WOW. I'm amazed at your comeback. I think I would have given up.

Take care of yourself Ellen. You're clearly stronger than me, but still a human, so don't overdo it.

Sounds like your superpower is superhealing, Ellen! Or maybe your superpower is determination! Ditto to the above posters--I'm extremely impressed, but also hoping you go a little bit easy on yourself, at least for a few weeks!

Lovely photos, and thanks for sharing.

By the way, I found that adding arm and shoulder exercises to my fitness center workouts after my fractured humerus helped a great deal. I have less sensitivity and pain there now than before the fracture.

Hi My Skyline Sister,
Had no idea you went through all of this on your shoulder. I was wondering why I hadn't seen you on the trail. Its good to have you back
Its so funny how you can tell when certain "spirits" are not on the trail. Glad you are back!!!

Howdy All :)

Thank you so much for your kind words. Numerous people helped in my recovery following the injury and surgery:

Both Sally and Marilyn drove me to and from Burbank as well as to and from Glendale (orthopedist in Burbank and hospital in Glendale). I stayed with Sally's in laws the night before surgery and Marilyn stayed with me the night after my surgery.

Ken Murray (aka "Ken the Mountain Doc") expedited the consult with my orthopedist Dr.Chris Lee. Another physician friend in the desert (who wishes to remain anonymous) was working to get me taken care of as well.

My 92 year old mom sustained a hip fracture the night before my surgery on Jan 8. My sisters (Carol and Connie) took care of my mom during the hospital stay, surgery and transfer to rehab.

After seeing Dr. Lee one week post-op. I used the recumbent bike at my sister's (Carol) Jazzercise studio.

Once cleared to hike (6 weeks post op), my friends Sally, Marilyn, Sandy, Cameron and Joe J significantly dropped their pace to 1) not kill me off aerobically and 2) reduce my risk of falling.

Reads a bit like an Academy Award acceptance speech. Seriously though, I owe numerous people a debt of gratitude.

From the heart,
Ellen

We're going to create a new "Academy Award" for hikers called the "Ellen" -- for hikers who just won't quit.
