Here's a quick report on an overnight trip this past weekend to the Oak Canyon Rockhouse from Hwy 74. I parked at the Palm View Dr. trail head and took the ridge route down to canyon bottom. About a quarter mile after reaching Palm Canyon I stashed a couple liters of water for my return and followed the "trail" up the ridge, east towards upper Oak Canyon. The route from here on out was maybe 20% discernible trail, 20% bush-wacking and 60% easy cross country. I saw no other foot prints or evidence of recent visitors, just a few healthy looking deer and couple jackrabbits. From what I saw, there aren't even any cattle being grazed over there this season as it's incredibly dry and desiccated with the only surface water to be found the Rockhouse spring and that still was pretty rank. I filtered a couple liters but the lingering taste was less than refreshing. After trying to consume the overabundance of food I always carry, I slept in the soft pasture and enjoyed a calm star filled night with only the sounds of an owl and a few curious mice. Topped off my water in the morning and made it back to the car by early afternoon via the low route up Palm Canyon.
