NOAA is expecting 5 feet of snow?

Postby zippetydude » Mon Jan 04, 2016 6:04 pm

If you add up the inches of snow predicted for tonight through Thursday night it comes out to over 5 feet of snow.

That's a lot of snow in a 4 day period. Seems like their estimates may be high, but if not then the danger of avalanche seems like it might be significant. At the very least, we are finally getting some moisture in this parched region. Enjoy everyone! Maybe it will continue and we'll actually have springs flowing again...

*watches Long Valley webcam in complete awe*

I've been in San Diego for 16 years and don't ever recall it raining so hard for such a sustained period of time, as it has today. It's literally been a nonstop downpour since around 9:30am -- and we're just getting started 8)

I hope the mountains get absolutely blanketed with snow this year. Even if it shortens the duration of my 2016 hiking season, I know the mountains desperately need the precipitation. Last year it was the strangest feeling being on top of Half Dome - in late March - with clear skies and literally no snow on the surrounding peaks. Or doing Skyline at the end of October without any fear of inclement weather. Both experiences (while amazing) felt odd and extremely out of the ordinary.

Well the Tram Cam shows that it is quite the winter wonderland on top the mountain. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

I went up the tram this afternoon to check conditions. Long Valley has 2.5 feet of fresh snow. Without skis or snowshoes I wasn't able to check conditions any higher.
Happy Trails!
