Conditions to the summit?

Postby Funyan005 » Wed Dec 16, 2015 6:40 pm

Haven't seen any postings for conditions...
Where's the snow level start? Pretty consistent snow from the tramway to the summit these days?

Thanks in advance guys!

I started at Deer Springs and snow was patchy but it was about 3 or 4 inches at Suicide Rock(7300ft). The tops of the mountains looked like they got more snow. It was icy and slippery going to Suicide Rock so I imagine you would need microspikes/crampons for San Jacinto.

Consistent snow from tram to summit as of last saturday. I didn't need extra traction because of the fresh snow then. Microspikes may be useful at this point but you may be able to get by with just some poles.

For anyone curious, snow was present all the way from tram to summit as others have said. There is also a path that follows the summer route kicked in the snow all the way to the summit. We only had to break a tiny bit of trail today as someone had come up from the other side of wellmans and had graciously made a perfect trail to the summit.

Crampons or micro spikes weren't necessary - but this can totally vary on the freeze thaw cycle of course. We had them but never used

Does anyone have an update on snow conditions? I'm wondering if there's enough snow to snowshoe between the tram and summit.

Plenty of snow for snowshoeing from the tram to the summit.
Happy Trails!

I went up to the peak Tuesday from the tram all by my little lonesome. My partners in crime were grounded...Ellen has a broken humerus and Marilyn had family obligations. There is a snowshoe super highway following the Sid Davis Drainage from the ranger station to the peak. All rocks and brush are covered in snow. Conditions are perfect! I passed two gentlemen without snowshoes that had a minimum of post-holing as the snow on the snowshoe track is quite consolidated. I will try to put some pictures together and post them.
