In Palm Canyon how about the Maynard Mine Trail in the Indian Canyons Reservation site. Its in the sun most of the time, provides a chance to see the canyon area from above and doesn't get packed with people. You will have to pay the gate fee of about $8 I believe. A short 100 ft walk above the mine opening will bring you to a great spot to sit and view down into the canyon multiple waterfalls.

Another option might be Murray Peak. There are a multitude of routes to use in getting and leaving it. The fastest way up is from Rim Rock Shopping Center via the north face. The most scenic route is one that would take you up from the south side. You could start out off of Bogart Trail.

You could also just mosey up the first 2000ft of C2C and return.

Hi Jim,
Hope we've not Hi-jackin this thread?
If the Santa Ana's develop, J Tree will get hit hard by them.

There's a great hike just before the Indian Canyons, called Oswit (stands for Eagle in Cahuilla), it's should be about what your looking for.
It's much more gradual than most of the ones already listed here, approx. 1,000 ft. in 2-3 miles, (instead of 1 mi.), great scenery, unfortunately no water at present.
If you e-mail, scott@palmspringshiking.com I'll get you the directions if your interested.
Also Murray Canyon in the Indian Cyns (7 sisters) is 5 miles total, approx 500 ft. It's by far the most private, as you cannot drive to it, you have to start at Andreas, (there's a great old trail I can tell you about to get there).

Hope to see you guys at Los Cas Sat, will be on Skyline too, not sure about the 10 meet.

Sounds like a good option. How steep is it? Is the route described on any of the links Cy sent out? I haven't had a chance yet to fully peruse those links. I'm really not familiar with the PS area although I have been up in some of the canyons on the res about 10 years ago.

Same question, here: how steep?

Skyline? For Michiko? No, no, Walt, I want to marry her, but thanks for giving me an "escape route." :D

Oh, well, I figure Cy doesn't need too much help from the forum to turn 70.

Can't wait to read Sean's piece, Cy. You will post link to it here, right?
If I had to pick just one picture from my pile for an article about you and Skyline, I would pick this one:

Now that I know where that is, next time I'll make you wait and turn around and walking up. lol

Maybe the Art Smith Trail would be a nice gentle hike. I'm going to go see if I can jog some of it tomorrow morning and then do the hike up to Asbestos Mountain.

Happy Thanksgiving All :D

Now that I've hijacked my own thread ...

It will be so nice to meet people on this forum either on the trail or at Las Consuelas. It's easy to recognize me (no, I'm not referring to scars on my legs from Tamarack) -- I'll be the dead blond hiking 8)

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

I am a lock for Las Casuelas but still questionable for the hike. Looks like it will be a last minute call. Either way I will probably need the wine Ellen!

See everyone tomorrow. :D

Cy, thanks for the links. I printed out the Indian Canyon trails; we'll do one of them.

See you tomorrow.
