What about an answer to the post which ends the discussion.

Can someone explain the tank/faucet setup in Round Valley? I always thought that the pipe was just "stuck in the ground" and was fed by an underground spring.

Is the tank buried under ground or aboveground nearby? How far from the faucet? Does the tank have a top? How do rats get inside?

Does anyone have some specifics on the setup of the pipe?

I believe that the pipe is spring fed, but rather than going from the spring to the pipe directly, it goes into the tank as an intermediate step.

I think ... my memory is sketchy here ... I've seen an old wooden tank near the old CCC cabin in Round Valley. The tank (I'm visualizing it in my mind) is wood with metal "tie rods" (can't think of a better description) that encircle the tank and have something like a turn buckle connecting them to keep the wood in place.

Anyone else recall this tank or have I just been working too hard lately?

As for how do rats get in, has anyone in the entire history of humankind ever figured out how to keep a thirsty rat out of a wooden water tank? Rats can chew through darned near anything and can climb like you wouldn't believe.

Rat water? Ug! I've never purified the water from the spigot and we've been running TO that spigot to refill our bottles for years! Minimalist ultrarunners don't usually carry food yet alone a filter. Yum, iodine...
