FYI, tram is open at 8am every Friday until shutdown, which I believe is the 2nd week in Sept.

That's good news, I've always been sour about their weekday schedule. Hope it continues.

Naismith's Rule for Skyline:

12 mi./3mph + 8,000 ft./2,000 fph = 4 hr. + 4 hr. = 8 hr.

The Naismith's Rule calculation I did would imply an average speed of 12 miles / 8 hours = 1.5 miles per hour. And I think the distance estimate of 12 miles for Skyline is probably generous enough to allow for some wandering around.

Ah. True. My thought was along the lines of that not everyone hikes 3 mph even on the flat, especially slow pokes like me. I guess I'm saying there's some variability. I tend to use Naismith+ (Naismith + a bit extra) since I'm slower than Mr. Naismith.

Yeah, I think it's more like 8 miles although I've heard 9 miles as well.

I also pad Naismith's Rule, since I am slow. Very slow. The big joker in the rule is how it accounts for downhill, or the fact that it doesn't. The rule seems to have been formulated for normal hikes where downhill loss is the same as uphill gain. So how fast does it assume you are going downhill? I don't know. One interpretation would be that it assumes 3 mph going downhill, the same as on a flat trail. That certainly doesn't apply to me. Like most people, I was once fairly fast going downhill. But not any more.

I usually estimate (emphasis on estimate) 2/3 the time to descend that it took me to ascend. Sometimes it works.

Funny, but I use somewhere from .6 to 2/3 (.67 obviously) depending on the trail, so our experience and mathematical nerdiness are approximately equal!
