Trip Report for 11/14

I completed the Skyline Trail yesterday, beginning from the Desert Museum Trailhead at 5:41 A.M. I started with 2 Gallons of water and plenty of snacks. In retrospect, I had about ½ to ¾ more gallons of water than I needed. I got to the Painted rocks at 6:11 A.M. right at sunrise; a very beautiful sight. The weather was perfect, and about ½ hour after the painted rock, a group of four hikers past me, led by “guest.” I want to thank all of them for stopping and saying Hi! Just to let “guest” know, my trash stayed with me until the tram and was thrown away in the dumpsters :) I was doing pretty good until 4,000 ft, which I reached at 3:20 minutes, when I started to get a cramp in my left calf. Luckily, I worked it out and pressed on, since I was feeling great from a cardio standpoint. My goal was to reach the tram in less than 7:30. In the lower section, I lost the trail twice, but found in pretty quickly. The desert scenery and local vegetation is really amazing and makes this trail so addicting. As you rise, the changes before you eyes are something that is hard to replicate, especially if you are from the east coast, like me (Atlanta, Georgia). Also, the elevation gain is also unmatched in many ways. For me, the highest peak in Georgia is 4,200 feet high, so Skyline basically doubles that elevation in 10 miles. Amazing. I got to Flat Rock in 5:45, and started that notorious hike up the tram. It was here that my calf cramp really gave me problems. I had stop many times to rest and massage it. I kept going at a decent pace and crossed the traverse sections with no problems; however, this is where my big problem occurred: I lost the trail. Now, I remember from Perry’s guide that once you reach the cliff by Coffman’s Crag, to hike straight up. Now, before I started up, I retraced the trail back, and tried to make sure I did not miss it. I did not see it, so I went back. I was a little nervous at this time, because the slope above is very rocky and loose in some parts. However, I knew I had to get going. I hiked up for about 75-100 feet and was looking around when I saw a faint trail to my left about 10 feet down. Relieved, I got back on it and at 7:18 crested the last ridge into Long Valley. I bettered my time from before (7:30) and was very satisfied. I contemplated going to the peak, and did some mathematical calculations that would have put me in the dark coming down, and although I had a headlamp, I made the decision to stay put. I have done the Cactus to Clouds once before in October, 2005 and was content at ending the day at the tram. I am so amazed by all of you that do this hike regularly, and even more amazed at those of you who accomplish it at such great paces, like “guest.” However, that is the beauty of the hike: No matter the pace, there is a sense of accomplishment afterwards. Again, you are all amazing. Thank you Perry for the hiking board and web site. The information and dialogue is so valuable that anyone not using them prior to the hike are missing a great resource. I am not sure if/when I will return to do it again, but I really enjoyed it again. Now, I head back to Atlanta.

Hi CXP777,

Thanks for the trip report. You and I share a few things in common. We both push through the 1st part of C2C too fast and suffer for it later. We both lose the trail from Coffman's going up. We both are from down south.

Say hello to Dusty's BBQ for me and remember your San Jacinto hike each time you pass a roadside stand selling boiled peanuts.

Hi CXP777 (Chris?),

Way to go on your Skyline, this is an ass-kicker, even if you live here & do it more. I have to say that I'd get a Camelbak so you can lose that big jug! I'm sure it got trashed properly, thxs from all of us.

Just realize, the people I had with me were; 2 Ironwomen (Hawaii Championship & others) 1 serious bike racer & 2 mt climbers, so there's a reason we made it look easy(we pulled off a 4:45, 2 went ahead by 10 mins, 2 actaully had never done it perviuosly, and I do it weekly!).

Hope you make it back to enjoy this beautiful mountain again, maybe you can get away & train on some other mts to help you out.

PS, look into good energy replacement drinks that are high in Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium & Postasium, or, electrolyte replacement, as this can help with the cramps.

happy climbing, nice meeting you,

ss

Well, back in 32 degree Atlanta. Good to be home. I really enjoyed my time in Palm Springs. The weather was fantastic and the mountain is amazing. You truly have a wonder in your backyard.

Guest: Yes, you remember my name. Good memory. Your pace is beyond amazing, even knowing your background. Weekly! My body is still recovering. However, that is why you looked in great shape and enjoying so much. I feel a little better knowing I kept pace with you for a short time (like, really short) and thank you for your feedback. I will scrap the pack and go with a camelback next time. I also will be looking at increasing my cardio work and hike more of the local hills (our mountains aren’t really mountains by western standards.)

I hope to make it back next year, probably October, to do the whole thing. I would like to make it an annual trip, but being married with kids makes this trip a big compromise with my wife. However, she has been good with it twice now, so hoping for to be good with it next year. One last thing I noticed this time around: A lot of downhill and re-climbing. I know there have been posts saying 300 feet total on Skyline, but it sure seemed a bit more. But, I did not have any GPS and it could have been a misperception on my part.

magikwalt:

Happy Birthday to you as well. I saw a few Marines on the flight out to PS who were stationed at Twentynine Palms. The one next to me got back from Iraq in August. I was grateful. Oh, the memories.

There are two areas of elevation loss that come to mind.

The first is as you move from the flat area just beyond the halfway point (4300ft or so) and begin to transition away from the Coachella Valley viewing side of the trail. It seems to decline for 4-5 minutes.

The second starts at 5,000ft where a flat tombstone shaped rock marks the trail. Andy Hollinger told me that the rock used to have words on it and I can almost make out some writing but alsa One Eyed Fat Men don't see very well. This section decends a couple hundred feet of elevation before transitioning upward to begin the final section leading to the Flat Rock dry falls area.

I used to stop for at the tombstone rock area but found that my legs became too sluggish ascending the very steep section that follows. Besides its always nice to hurry on to the dry falls area and see who you get to chat with.
