I hope it's not a turn for the worse, but flames are visible from Palm Springs tonight.
Happy Trails!

Reports are that a lot of stuff is still burning within the perimeter but that the perimeter isn't expanding much. That's somewhat good news.

I've put a couple of maps on my blog and have done some analysis of what can be seen in the map in the areas highlighted by green rectangles.
See: Lake Fire.

Thanks for the map HJ. I am wondering about the severity of the destruction, and we won't really be able to assess that until we actually get out there. Many of the pictures I've seen show the fire on the ground, while some others, like the one you posted before and after, show utter devastation. When they re-open Hwy 38 I'll drive up and take some pics with my zoom from Wildhorse and any other fairly high spots that will give some decent view. Still hoping for the best...still filled with dread...

The latest incident report

http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4302/

states that 'Fire within the wilderness is low intensity'. Perhaps this means that it is patchy, rather than raging fire throughout the area defined by the perimeter. I hope so.

It's going to be a mixed bag. For whatever reason, the area around upper East Barton Flats and Poop Out Hill seems to have gotten really hammered. Not sure why.

that North East extreme perimeter around Coon Creek has really taken off with gusty ridge top winds.
it's about 10 miles away now working it's way up 3 Sisters ridge, seems past the jumpoff down into the canyon.

there's some fuel on the north side of 3 sisters ridge, down into morongo upper canyon.can see in pic below,
but it's definitely running up to sawtooth/millard complex 80kac burn from 2006, otherwise, i'd be getting ready to split the scene.

Updated map information now available. I've plotted the burn area over my Interactive San Gorgonio Wilderness Map and posted it on my blog:
Lake Fire.

I've listed out all the trail camps that are in or near the burn area and have given them a status: Burned or OK. Interestingly, Lodgepole seems to be holding out although I'm not sure how much longer that will last. High Meadows Springs also has not burned (yet). Mine Shaft Flat doesn't seem to be in any danger, but Big Tree is pretty close to the fire incursion over Ten Thousand Foot Ridge. Big Tree is probably even more imperilled because the Forest Service doesn't know where it is.

Thanks for the recent maps, pics, and updates, HJ and Pi. I just checked the weather report and there is a chance for thunder-showers on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. I'm doing the rain dance! After all the noble efforts of firefighters in the San Jacinto fire a couple of years ago it was the rain that ultimately helped put out the fire. I know there is a chance of lightning strikes starting new fires, and mud/ash flows from rain, but I am still hoping for a downpour!
