Fire in Whitewater Canyon ...

Postby cynthia23 » Thu Jun 18, 2015 10:08 am

Hiking Garstin this morning, I saw what at first I took (with deranged optimism) to be a giant weather front in the pass over San G., and then realized, a second later, it's a huge smoke cloud. I'm not good with geography over there but it looks like it's at the top of Whitewater Canyon. It looks big and bad. The smoke is starting to fill up the Coachella Valley. Info, anyone?

Just checked KESQ--they're calling it the Lake Fire, it's 1500 acres and 5 percent contained, it started last night, it's south of Jenks Road, and they're closing all hiking trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness.

Hi Cynthia. It's the Lake Fire over by Jenks Lake.

There's a thread on it by Florian on this board and one by me on the San G board.

Thanks Zip. I should have checked over there first. I hope they get a grip on it fast or it won't be good. :(

You had me scared for a minute there, Cynthia. I was afraid there were TWO active fires.

Sorry HJ! I always forget to check 'the other side' of the board, my bad.

But sadly, this fire looks bad enough for two fires. Let's hope they control it.
