Heading to SJP... again

Postby Rck » Sat Apr 11, 2015 4:33 pm

Heading to San Jacinto Peak again end of April. Last year I stayed overnight at Round Valley Camp. This year staying at Little Round Valley coming from Idyllwild. I was wondering what are the regs on where to camp at on the trail. Last year I noticed a few good spots to stay and do not want to break any rules. Also noticed the area is State Park and Wilderness so not sure of regs. I already paid for a spot at LRV so just want to know for next year. Any advice would be helpful. Last request, info on water because I would hate to carry the extra weight if I do not need it.

Thanks
Rick

Rick,

In the state park, you're only supposed to camp in one of their approved campgrounds (Tamarack, Round Valley, Little Round Valley, and Strawberry Junction).

As far as water is concerned, there's almost guaranteed water at Bed Springs Crossing, but in this drought year, all other sources are going to be less reliable. There might be water at Little Round Valley, but I wouldn't count on it without a first hand report. See also Water Sources of the San Jacinto Mountains -- West Side.

Climbed Marion Mountain trail on Sunday. Bed Springs (crosses trail just below Little Round Valley) had very good flow but no water that I could see in Little Round Valley.

The campsite I like there (at LRV) is Thunderview or maybe it's Thunderbird, one of the two. Has a nice view towards the west, castle rock to the north west, and some larger rocks that can keep any wind at bay. Bed Springs is a very short hike for good water.

Spent Saturday night at LRV. Looked to me like the best camp was the one farthest NW? But alas somebody was there. I just hiked an add'l 400 yards or so and found a very private spot with equal beauty. Not "approved" but.. oh well.

Likely be snow to melt on the north facing slopes 1/2 mil away for many weeks to come...

Heard about thunder view or...going to try that. Will be there Tuesday so hopefully it will be empty. Looking at Mountain-weather.com should be nice and cold at peak so LRV should be a tad warmer, brrrr. Told my son to bring another layer for the peak. Can't wait!
