Snow Galore

Postby mattytreks » Mon Feb 23, 2015 12:38 pm

Was hoping to have been able to do Skyline on Saturday 2/28, but looks like this little overnight snowstorm dumped a ton on the mountains.

Anyone out near the Palm Springs area able to tell approximately what elevation the snowline fell down to?

Thanks!

Howdy All :)

Went up Skyline yesterday with the Craigmeister, Marilyn and Sally. We met Michael -- he was recovering from a 100 mile run in Paige, AZ  and happy to mosey along with us.

The snow started at Flatrock. We started post-holing at the beginning of the traverse. The Craigmeister broke trail from the start of the traverse to Grubbs Notch.

Happy polar bears on the traverse.

Best icicle of the day.

Sadly, the snow flocked trees, rime ice and icicles will probably be gone by this weekend

Enjoyed celebratory beverages at the tram bar, then had to wait 1 1/2 hours for a cab van

Recommend mircospikes due to melting and refreezing. Hopefully we'll get some more snow this weekend.

Ellen

Thanks so much for sharing the report and photos, ellen!

Wow, it would be great to hike Skyline under these conditions...it's gorgeous with a little snow on the upper sections.

And thank you for the recommend on the microspikes...those might get put to use on Saturday :)

Skyline was lovely on Tuesday. On that day there was no need for micros as the snow was fresh and sticky, although deep enough to post-hole a near the end. It will probably get a little slipperier in the next few days, and another storm is expected this weekend. Ellen, Marilyn, Craig and I let a very fit looking "youngster" from Ohio tag along. It was rather serendipitous that we joined together as he was a joy to have along, and he would probably have had some route-finding issues without us because the trail was quite obliterated with snow in places.

Great pictures! Anyone have any recent pics of the summit area? I'm interested in the snow coverage on the east face of San J where the trail does that last big switchback, and also the north to east aspects of Jean, now that we're heading into another storm. The more snow the better.
