Heading to the peak on Dec 12

Postby bundybytes » Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:31 pm

Im sure hoping the rain starting tomorrow through Wednesday doesn't bring a ton of snow. We need to be able to see some sort of markers and trail. We plan on being at the museum trail head Saturday morning between 2-3am with hopes of hitting the peak between 10 and noon.
Im fine with some snow but just not a bunch.
Crampons, Gaiters, and walking sticks will be a must on this trip!
Oh, and being our first hike on this mountain, Im looking forward to the tram at the end of the day.
Very excited!

I have no idea your ability, but just so you know that is a very ambitious time estimate, in my opinion. Especially if its your first time up and there is snow.

Other than that, good luck and have fun!

Howdy :)

There is no snow on Skyline or in Long Valley -- hiked up Skyline with friends yesterday.

While in the tram station, we talked with a couple who hiked from the tram. They said there was little snow and it was up high.

I think crampons would be overkill. Recommend carrying microspikes instead. I don't know that you'll even need gaiters to keep your feet dry at the summit.

There are multiple routes going up from the museum to the picnic tables which can be confusing even for experienced Skyliners. If this is your first time going up Skyline, consider starting from Ramon Rd.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen
