Kaboom!

Postby cynthia23 » Sat Nov 15, 2014 8:02 pm

I was coming down Skyline today, and at about 3500 feet, at about 10.10 a.m, I heard a couple of big "booms'. There was a pause of about a minute, and then another, fainter boom. About ten minutes later I ran into a couple coming up and asked them if they'd heard the booms. They had too.

About five years ago, I also heard a big boom, though it was higher up, at about 5000 feet. According to Cahuilla legend, Tahquitz makes booming sounds at the bottom of the canyon when he's angry. I'll leave alone the question of Tahquitz, but it does seem there might be some physical reality to the legend, i.e. the booming sounds. Wonder if anyone else here has ever heard/experienced this on Skyline? Of course, obviously this could have been something else, i.e. sonic booms, but I wonder if there is some geological phenomena specific to the canyon that could cause these sounds. I find it interesting that both times I heard the booms, I was on a part of the trail overlooking Tahquitz Canyon.

Very curious to know if others have ever heard anything?

I heard them as well but i was at home in Palm Springs. I assumed were sonic booms from aircraft of some sort.

Aw, darn. I was hoping that maybe it was the mysterious geological phenomena . :( Still, at least I know I wasn't the only one who heard the booms! :D (next topic--sounds people have hallucinated on Skyline?)

Once when I heard deep reverberations, CCC was doing trail improvements. :-)

It's aircraft related and appears to be coming out of Mojave or into the Mojave when the boom hits. FAA socal tracon has been following these and has some interesting radar data ;)

Really? How interesting. That actually sounds pretty mysterious too!
