A different view of the mtn

Postby Florian » Tue Nov 04, 2014 5:10 pm

A week or two ago a sculpture was airlifted from the Palm Springs Art Museum to the upper tram station. A GoPro camera was attached to the sculpture for the flight. It's a large file, about 2.4 GB and runs 11 minutes, so it might take a bit of time to open or download.

Thought you all might enjoy it.

So i just got an email from Dropbox that my public links have been disabled due to excessive traffic. Maybe a 2.4 GB file is too big to share. Did the link work for anyone?

Seems the limit is 20 GB/day. I need to remove the link. Sorry. I'll see if i can upload to YouTube altho the resolution won't be as good.

Okay, i have the video on YouTube now. Flight time about 7 minutes!

Here are a couple of still pictures of the helicopter and of the art ..

I'd never seen a helicopter like this. Two counter-rotating rotors and no tail rotor. Very cool machine.

Thanks for posting Florian. The helicopter is indeed an interesting one. It is a Kaman K-Max, there is a nice article on Wikipedia: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaman_K-MAX

That was cool Florian. Makes me appreciate how far we go up when we do Skyline. Also, that helicopter pilot did a remarkable job of maintaining almost perfectly neutral bouyancy as they were adjusting the placement. Those guys are amazing. When I used to run the L A Marathon, I would look up at the helicopters before the race - they would hover in the exact same spot without any perceivable motion, as if they were anchored to some invisible building. Anyway, thanks again for the post!

Wow, I can only echo Zip--that video really makes me appreciate how big this mountain actually is and what a feat hiking up Skyline is. Amazing. (and, I also agree with Zip that the helicopter pilot did a really good job landing that thing!)

Very, very neat video, Florian. Made my day. Thanks so much for posting that, it's definitely worth viewing.

That really is a cool video Florian, thanks for going through all the trouble to put that up.

Very cool seeing it from that perspective

That is so cool, many parts of the Skyline trial are recognizable. Thanks!
