Two small fires burning near Idyllwild and Marion Mt.

Postby cynthia23 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:33 pm

There is a small (a couple of trees) lightning fire burning in the backcountry behind Suicide Rock. I happen to be in Idyllwild right now and while driving in Idy, weirdly enough, I actually spotted the fire and was the first to call 911 (what are the odds of that?) According to what I see on the Idyllwild Emergency website, they have already dropped a hand crew up there. We hear copters also. Also it's drizzling so no doubt they will get it under control. Still, if you are planning on hiking up to Suicide Rock tomorrow there might be a problem. Also, according to the web site, there is a second lightning fire burning up near Marion Mountain but not much more info available.

Hopefully all will be well.

Got caught over by strawberry junction yesterday when the weather rolled in, all the way back to LV in rain with lots of lightning nearby.

Hm. I'm surprised given the amount of rain that fell last night, but unfortunately the fire by Suicide Rock has grown to 100 acres. That's troubling, but ground crews are on site and probably there will be more rain. Still, it doesn't sound like a good area for a hike today.

Strange it's not listed. http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current

Maybe too small? According to the latest update on IdyllwildEmergency.com, both fires are now contained--good news! Thank you fire crews.

Inciweb is calling them "August Lightning Fires" with names of "Rock 1" and "Rock 2" but not much info about size and containment at the moment.

According to IdyllwildEmergency.com, Rock 1 is only 100 feet by 100 feet (not 100 acres, as they had earlier posted--a big difference!) and the other, 50 by 50 feet. Also it's raining right now, so I feel reassured that this likely is not of any concern. Still, with all of this, it's certainly not a good time to hike in the area.
