RMRU is currently going through a major recruitment drive

Postby greatshaitan » Tue Jun 17, 2014 6:56 am

I know we have the link at the top of the forums but I wanted to spread the word a little more directly 8).The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit is currently going through a major recruitment drive. I can honestly say that besides my wife and son, being on the team has been the best thing to happen to me in my life. See the links below for more information.

A most worth cause. I hope a few qualified individuals will step forward.

First of all, these S&R volunteers are some of the best and under-recognized people in the world that I've been lucky enough to have never needed.

That said, are there any opportunities as a part-time member? I guess my predicament is that I'm physically/mentally willing and able but I'm also the guy with two small kids, sole working stiff, little disposable income, yadda, yadda, yadda. That said, I couldn't be the "Drop What I'm Doing At Any Minute" guy to head off to the hills for a day or two. Though I'm very jealous of those who can. . I'm just curious if there is a supporting role where one would not be depended on as much as the lead members, i.e. planned or multi-day searches, training exercises etc...

Does that make any sense?

Being an RMRU member is time consuming and can be quite costly. I know I personally spend a lot of time with activities, my wife calls me the disappearing man. Also, checking the records I have spent >$1000 this year alone, $350.00 of that on gas.

Having said that we are an all volunteer team. All of us have other duties and obligations, family being the big one. This is why we need a large team so that when we do get called out we have enough people that can make it to field a team. We also have Support Members that may not be active field "drop of a hat" type guys that can assist the team in other ways.

Send an email to info@rmru.org and come to a meeting. You can talk with other members to see if we are right for you :D

It seems like a hard, fun and rewarding "part time job". The 40 hours a month is probably the toughest thing for most who would like to join but cannot. That is my sticking point. I don't know how you make the time available, but I applaud you for it.

I may try to post something on SummitPost (if you haven't already). SuperTopo might be another site to consider. There are also various canyoneering sites that may be worthwhile, such as RopeWiki.
