La Quinta Question

Postby Mikelow11 » Fri Jun 06, 2014 4:02 pm

Hello. I just moved to La Quinta, in the cove. Just wondering someone could tell me what mountains are surrounding me? I live on Avenida Bermudas, south of Ave 48 by about a mile. Thanks so much!

Several trails at the top of the cove. Take Bermudas south until you reach the end, you will see a couple parking areas plus street parking. Bad time of year to hike though with the heat. Google boo hoff trail and bear creek oasis. Several options off of the boo hoff including the great 15 mile Guadalupe route which takes you up into pinyon.

Do you mean what specific ranges or peaks are near you?

Ditto what climbant says about this not being the time to explore, though, especially since you're new here. Do not go out for more than thirty or forty minutes, even early in the morning. Wait until temps fall below mid-80's before attempting longer hikes.

Indio Mtn is the peak to your west. Here's a link to a topo map centered on La Quinta. You can drag the image around to see more. The topo was made before most of the current trails were built so they aren't on the map ..

I see I read the OP wrong. Florian's link is perfect.

The mountain east of the cove is called Coral Mountain
The tall peak south of the cove is Martinez Mountain.
To the southwest is Sheep Mountain.
The tallest point of the west ridge is Coyote Mountain
Indio Mountain is due west.
Eisenhower is northwest on the same ridge.

They are all part of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

When you want to learn some trails send me a message. There are lots of them.

This is literally a side track, but if you go to Florian's link, leave the mountains, and cruise over to the valley floor, you can see 'the way it was' here forty or so years ago. Cathedral City isn't even there, just the cove, streets aren't there or don't have the same names, and most of the valley is 'just' empty, undeveloped desert. The Coachella Valley must have been glorious back then, before the developers got their hands on it. :( Thanks for that neat 'side trip', Florian!
