Three Peak Challenge

Postby halhiker » Wed May 14, 2014 11:30 pm

Climb Baldy, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto to win prizes.

The hardest part just might be getting to Adventure 16.

Of course they're not the three tallest peaks in Southern California. Well, San Gorgonio Mountain is among the top three but San Jacinto Peak and Mt. Baldy are not.

The actual three highest are:
San Gorgonio Mountain (11,502')
Jepson Peak (11,205')
Bighorn Mountain (10,997')

San Jacinto Peak (10,834') is the 6th highest peak in Southern California.
Mount San Antonio (10,064') is the 24th highest peak in Southern California.

For those who like peaks, I've got the 25 highest peaks in Southern California listed on my blog.

HJ, you made me laugh with that.

BTW, this challenge reminds me of the Jansport 8000 meter Challenge, when people who work at sports retail stores compete to do all 3 peaks in 24 hours or less.

A couple of years ago I was running back down San G when I passed the front runners coming up. They had already done Baldy and were starting on San G, but since I was running, they thought I was the leader, way out ahead of them, coming back down already. It took me a few minutes to realize that, and it made me laugh. I do a bit of trail running, but I'm not even close to competitive levels, so I told a few of them who were stopped to refuel to tell the leaders that the guy on the way down had only done San G and was not in the race. I was famous for a moment though!

I prefer the other name for this challenge: The Three Saints. :)

While it's called the Three Peak Challenge, they do say climb the three highest MOUNTAINS in So. Cal. The higher peaks are sub peaks on San Gorgonio Mountain.

I figured if Ellen could get to an A-16 she'd be done by this weekend.

It's hard to call Anderson and San Bernardino sub peaks of Gorgonio, but whatever. It 's all good.

That's what they based this challenge on. They were showing some pics of that race during the intro talk at the A16 store back in May (June?). Apparently that has been going on for many years. They'll have on this year again, but it's not open to the public.

How about:
The 3 high points of the 3 highest mountain ranges of southern California:
- San Bernardino Mountains with Mt. San Gorgonio
- San Jacinto Mountains with Mt. San Jacinto
- San Gabriel Mountains with Mt. San Antonio
