Water Sources on San Jacinto

Hiked to the peak via Marion Mountain trail this past Sunday. There is very good water crossing the trail at the usual point at roughly 9440 ft a little ways below Little Round Valley, but none in LRV itself. The flow where the water crosses the trail at the Deer Springs trail camp at around 8825 ft is a bit weak, but OK.

Great thanks. The deer springs trail camp, is that open to camping for anyone. I think I've seen trail workers camp there but I don't know much about it.

Not sure. Personally I wouldn't want to camp there. I have seen folks camping quite near the trail at a few level spots not far beyond the point in question and I doubt you would be hassled if you chose a spot within a short walk of the water but not visible from the trail. Check with the ranger station about camping regulations if you want to be 100% legal. Or search this site, I'm sure there are posts covering the rules.

Round Valley (as distinct from Little Round Valley) has a spring-fed pipe which has been running every time I have ever visited Round Valley, regardless of season. That said, this is a very dry year. But I bet there will be water in Round Valley through June.

called the ranger today. I told him I plan on camping in the chinquapin zone next weekend (may 9th). He told me he severely doubts there will be any water by then. bummer

Yesterday, May 1st, there was not water flowing in Round Valley. I checked at the Long Valley Ranger station and they told me that the pipe is broken and they expect to repair it soon.

Before I call the ranger: Does anyone know how the water sources on the West side of the mountain are? I am doing Fuller Ridge trailhead-Strawberry Junction campground, will I run in to anything, or will I have to go out of my way?

Heading up to SJP next Thursday for an overnight and I do hope they repair the pipe at Round Valley. I would hate to carry up extra extra water for the trip. So if anyone wants to head up there this weekend and give us a report that would be very nice, , well it was just a thought.

Going up Devils Slide last Sunday I spoke with a couple of backpackers who were coming down from Round Valley. I asked about the water situation and they said there was a small trickle of good water coming out of the pipe. Also said Wellmans Cienega had a small flow. It rained on the mountain Tuesday night. I would think there would still be running water up there.
