Views from Black Mountain

I was up on Black Mountain this weekend and took a few shots as the sun was setting above the clouds. I came up through the drizzle and fog, not expecting this at all, so it was quite a surprise. Gotta love these mountains. (There are also a few of Onion Rock. I am trying to find an xc route up to it. Too much bushwhacking to hike down from Black Mountain.) Anyway, hope you like the pics.

Zip, I've always been fascinated by Onion Rock. I think about every time I drive through the pass. Do you of any trip reports on the web? I've never seen anything where somebody hiked up to it.

Hi all. Kind of amazing how you can just stumble upon such breathtaking views, huh?

physicslord: I've searched and can't find anything either. HJ and I have been speculating on taking a top-down approach from Black Mountain to Onion Rock, but the brush is six to eight feet high of that really tough scrub oak. The fire during the summer cleared almost all the way up from the north, but it will be a challenge finding a way that doesn't run into serious rock climbing. I'm hoping to discover a route this winter. I'll post if I find one.

greatshaitan: Thanks for your post. Yes, that does look much more like Washington or Oregon than a mountain slope just a few miles from the desert!

HJ: Yup, the top is impassable. The road up was no problem, no rutting that an average car couldn't cross. Just a little messy towards the top, but it takes forever both ways! I think I like it better when I run it or mountain bike it. But it's a lot easier to fill a cache with a vehicle.

Cynthia23: Thanks to you also for your kind words. Some of the shots give a rough idea of what it was like in person, but of course the view in person was far more beautiful. It was stunning.
