I'm not Cy

Postby neverwashasbeen » Sat Nov 09, 2013 3:34 pm

I just had to share this. While hiking on the Skyline today, at my normal not so fast pace, I ran into a woman who asked if I was the "famous old guy" who does the Skyline every year and has done it "like 200 times". Of course I was flattered to be mistaken for a 200 year old guy, but I had to disappoint her and tell her that I'm not the famous old guy and I've only done the hike about 15 times.

Well, everyone misses Cy. You could study his accent, then do a "Tribute to Cy" tour up Skyline! That's what they do for a lot of rock stars... I'll definitely show up for that if you decide to give it a go.

Im not Cy

Postby Cy Kaicener » Sat Nov 09, 2013 4:08 pm

Here I am. I am flattered and humbled. Ellen has surpassed anything I ever did, even the 55 times in a year I believe, which she is too modest to admit.
I miss you all but I dont have a reliable car to get there if I could still do it at age 76. The last time was four years ago and I was having back problems even then. I did 2500 ft of elevation gain this morning which is now my limit.
The last I heard was that Doreen had done Skyline 270 + times

Fred Beckey who holds the record for first ascents in the United States is still climbing near 90 years old.

Swiss guide Ulrich Inderbinen climbed the Matterhorn 370 times - the last time at age 90 (Thats not the one in Disneyland)

I was also asked, a year or so ago in the chaparral above Flat Rock, if i was Cy. I was honored.

wow cy, that was an amazing video  .....motivates one to not make excuses(meaning me at age 54)on why one cant push to do what one wants to if desired. I had cleanup knee surgery a year ago and lost 72lbs in the last 10 months, but I've been afraid to try climbing at r.f here in Murrieta because of the slight pain I still feel in the joint :? . love all the posts and photo's on the gnarly hikes that include rated scrambles on rock and granite, but not convinced I can do such activities. But once again, thanks for the post.

Hiking with Cy

Postby JayO » Sun Nov 10, 2013 12:53 pm

I was so lucky to be a part of a Cy led hike up to the Tram about 5 years ago - as part of my first C2C. It was like having a personal tour guide. :)

Years ago, some people would get me and Cy mixed up. Just online, not in person. :D
